Journalists can party too

We’re not as square as you thought

With midterms being forced down students’ throats, spring break did not come soon enough. Ten days of liberation: the freedom to sleep in past noon, watch reruns of scandalous reality TV shows, and at least for the first few days of break, hang out with friends without a care in the world — except who’s buying the next 12-pack.

For some Express staff, spring break was an opportunity to drop those notepads and voice recorders, temporarily forget about where the next story is coming from, and explore the beautiful scenery of California and beyond.

Nicole Cardoza, the Express editor in chief, went to Bodega Bay with her brother, his wife and baby nephew.

“If you’ve never spent three days in a fifth-wheel, in the rain, with a screaming baby with the flu, I don’t recommend it.”

Despite the downsides, Cardoza witnessed an assortment of sea life.

“I saw a gray whale, five crested puffins, four brown pelicans, three sea lions, two harbor seals, a couple of egrets — and I ate, like, 17 smores.”

Staff columnist and reporter Hana King also went west. However, instead of following Cardoza to Sonoma, she drove to San Francisco to visit her sister.
“I went to a party where the walls and floors are made of trampolines and there’s a foam pit. It was super fun!”

King was not the only one to find a unique way to party on her break.

Peter Crosta, the Express features and special features editor, went to Berkeley to go to – what he thought would be – a regular dance party at a friend’s coop.

“It didn’t turn out the way I expected. Many people were naked and we were all covered in chocolate.”

He speculates there were 40 to 50 people at this “chocolate love orgy” and although Crosta
began only knowing one person, he made friends with almost half of the sweet and slippery house residents by the end of the night.

“It was intimidating, but after a little while you adjust to the situation and work with it.”
Staff photographer Windee Dawson went to a less-sticky celebration, her son’s wedding in Lake Tahoe.

“I’ve never been to Tahoe before and I’ve always wanted to shoot it.”

But if you asked Dawson what was most exciting about the trip, she’d probably tell you it was seeing Dominic Purcell, who plays Lincoln Burrows on FOX Television’s “Prison Break”, at a local mall.

“I saw him walking by and I didn’t know his name so I was like, ‘Prison Break, Prison Break!’ but he shook his head, no. I said, ‘Liar! You know who you are!’ And his bodyguard winked at me, so I know it was him.”

Many of the Express staff traversed California,
but one was brave enough to venture across the country to New York. Brandon Russell, his mother and older brother visited his oldest brother in the city and enjoyed the tourist’s role.

He saw Times Square and the Apollo Theater, took a tour bus around Central Park, sprinted through the Guggenheim before it closed, and went to the top of Rockefeller Center.

“It’s like San Francisco times 10 in terms of being crowded with traffic and all that stuff. I think San Francisco is the largest city I could live in.”

These staff editors, photographers, and writers were some of the luckier students who took advantage of their time during spring break. Other staffers, such as news editor Chris Geanakos, and staff writers Ryan Kleine and myself spent our breaks on our couches either sick, lazy or bored.

No matter what we did for our spring breaks, no matter how fun and exciting or lethargic and uneventful our time was, we all have to – once again – pick up our pens and notepads, clear out the space on our various recording devices, and report the news to the students and staff of City College.
