Car shows are every car lover’s car heaven. People walk by and gaze in awe. There are many cars to see, from the new Ford Mustang to the latest McLaren 675LT. Journalists interview car company representatives. Photographers accompany journalists. Some photographers are even car enthusiasts themselves, who wish to keep photographs for their records.

When we think about people who love cars, we think that most of them are male. It is more common to overhear a group of men talking about cars. It is also more common to see a man driving a fancy sport car.

Not often do we encounter female car-lovers. However, they may be sitting next to you, and you may not be aware of it.

Jessica Perez, 19, is a City College photography major. Her goal is to become a professional photographer and run her own studio. She also loves cars and loves to photograph them, especially sport cars and supercars.

When Perez was 14 years old, she says she discovered her passion for cars. Among her favorites are the Bugatti Veyron, Koenigsegg Agera, and the Audi R8.

Perez was born in Placerville. At the age of 7, her family moved to Sacramento. Perez grew up being close to her older and only brother, who was obsessed with cars. She says he influenced her in many ways.

“I have a passion for cars because of my brother,” says Perez. “He used to talk to me about cars.”

Her love of cars has transformed her into a diligent car-spotter. She never knows when she might happen upon a supercar—those that are rare and hard to find.

“The first time I saw an Audi R8 I was on my way back from a field trip to Great America,” says Perez. “We stopped in Vacaville. I was walking back from Starbucks with my friend and I saw it. It was black and shiny and so beautiful. I was at a traffic light, and I got to look at it for a good minute. I was excited. I was awe-struck.”

When she was 12, Perez says her parents joined Amway, a program that develops independent business owners. Since then, she has been influenced and motivated to start her own business. Perez wants to open her own studio.

“My goal is to get to the minimum level called ‘diamond’ in the business,” says Perez, speaking about the Amway levels of reaching business success.

At this level, she claims she will be in a good economic position to start her own business and own her dream cars.

Not only does Perez want to run her own photography studio, she wants to travel around the world.

Karla Fonseca is one of Perez’s close friends. She is very familiar with Perez’s desires, including traveling. A trip to Italy and France when Perez was 18 ignited a love of travel.

“Jessica is very passionate about cars,” says Fonesca. “I think it derives from her love of traveling.”

Perez enjoys traveling because she has hopes that someday, she will spot her favorite cars as she travels the world.

Angélica Carreón is also a student at City College. She has been friends with Perez for four years.

“She’s not a complete know-it-all of cars, but of the cars she likes, she’s definitely passionate,” says Carreón.

Carreón also says that it is not all about cars when it comes to Perez. Perez is also cares a lot for her friends.

“Our friendship is as if we were related,” says Carreón. “We have our ups and downs, we argue, we laugh, and we always have each other’s well-being in mind.”

Perez hopes that her obsession with photographing cars will lead to one day having her own supercar. In the future, if everything goes well, Perez says she would love to own a custom-made Bugatti.

“I like to take pictures of cars,” says Perez of the supercars that thrill her. “They are gorgeous.”
