The Panthers ran their way to a convincing victory Jan. 31, keeping American River College on their heels most of the evening for a final score of 96-69.

The Beavers failed to find an answer for a fast-paced, aggressive Panther offense. By midpoint of the half, City College reached a 15-point lead. The Panthers never looked back or slowed down. Leading 28 points by halftime, City College would go on to win by a 27-point margin.

With alert outlet passing off rebounds and turnovers, and forceful play at the basket, the Panthers utilized their speed and athleticism. City College head coach Andrew Jones had anticipated this level of skill from the Panthers all season.

“The more easy baskets we can get the better,” said Jones. “We’ve been preaching (fast-paced play) since the beginning of the season and it’s up to them to go out there and do it.”

Panther swingman Antwoine Davis (second in scoring in the Big 8) recorded double-double No. 15 on the season, with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Davis’ contributions were not limited to those seen in the box score. A key facilitator for the fast pace of the Panthers offense, Davis led the charge much of the game.

Davis credited the team’s performance to a Panther and Beaver rivalry dating back to the 1960s when American River joined City College in the Los Rios Community College District.

“There’s a lot of built up tension with both teams being here in the city,” said Davis. “It was kind of a personal game.”

Panthers forward (and Big 8 scoring leader) Bobby Barnes scored 22 pts, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 100 percent (3/3) from beyond the arc. Barnes attributed the team’s success to a collective commitment to play aggressively and attack the basket.

“We were really trying to get after it and play with a lot of intensity,” said Barnes.

Five regular season games remaining, the playoff chase is on in the Big 8 conference. Taking advantage of a floundering Beavers squad, the Panthers keep themselves in the hunt.
