Panthers forward Brittney Harper goes up for a layup in Jan. 17 loss to Santa Rosa.

A strong showing on defense was not enough for City College’s women’s basketball team when failing to find a rhythm on offense Jan. 14 cost Panthers the game, losing on the road to the Cosumnes River College Hawks 51–44.

Despite limited offensive production and falling behind 10-1 in the first four minutes of play, the Panthers came to life midway through the first half and managed to take a 2-point lead into the locker room thanks to strong defensive play to close out the half including holding star Hawks forward Janie Myles to just 2 first half points.

“We’re having a tough time coming out of the gate and playing well,” said Head Coach Devin Engebretsen. “We’ve got to come out and set the tone.”

The Panthers continued to play strong as the second half began, stretching their lead to 9 by the 15 minute mark of the period, but an 11-0 run by the Hawks over the next three minutes put the Panthers down by two at 33-31.

The Panthers would never catch the Hawks again and would find themselves trailing by 8 as time expired.

“We’ve just got to get better,” said Engebretsen. “We’ve got to work on offense.”
