College students always face uncertainty during the first days of school, but with the actual British Museum being just a few blocks away you might get the feeling that you’re not in Kansas anymore.
The Los Rios Study Abroad Program, located at the Cosumnes River College campus in the Visual and Performing Arts Division, provides opportunities for students to continue their education in a different culture and country.
Former Cosumnes River College student, Erick Ogle traveled to London in 2005. He says he always wanted to travel, and after attending one of CRC’s Study Abroad presentations, he was convinced.
“There’s so much to do. There’s so much planned out for you,” Ogle says.
Ellen Arden-Ogle, director of Los Rios Study Abroad Program and dean of Communications and Performing Arts at CRC, says the program has been around since the mid-1980s.
“It’s a life-changing experience,” Arden-Ogle says. “It breaks down all barriers.”
Despite the financial struggles the Los Rios District has faced, Arden-Ogle says the district has stayed committed to the Study Abroad Program.
“I’m very proud of our district,” says Arden-Ogle. “Even in these tight financial times our faculties and our board trustees are committed to keeping these opportunities open for students.”
The Los Rios District is in cooperation with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) and the Northern California Study Abroad Consortium (NCSAC).

AIFS has offices in all the offered program locations. Not only is the AIFS responsible for keeping contact with the directors at home but they also help students enjoy and try out new things that are important to the idea of being abroad.
According to Ogle, before the semester begins and during the semester breaks, students are able to visit other surrounding countries from the AIFS pre-tour organized trips.
“There were no restrictions at all. In fact it was the opposite,” says Ogle. “There was encouragement the whole time we were there.”
The program is not only available to students; professors can also apply for Study Abroad program and teach in another country.
City College Anthropology Professor William Doonan will be teaching in Florence, Italy, this spring semester. It’s his first time traveling with the Study Abroad program, but he’s no stranger to travel.
“I went to London in my junior year and I still can’t stop thinking about it,” says Doonan. “There’s no better way to experience a culture than diving right in.”
The program is now accepting enrollment applications for Paris this summer. The Study Abroad Program leaders, like Arden-Ogle, encourage students to take the opportunity.
“I am happy to work with students on planning which programs would be right for them,” says Arden-Ogle.
