Home-field advantage

For the last five years, City College soccer was forced to juggle, sprint, pass and block away from its home field. That is to say, what was left of the field, which seemed like a war-torn battle plane.

Completed with unleveled ground and potholes, the field’s conditions created an unsafe environment for players and showed little college pride.

Field conditions were so rough that City College soccer was forced to practice and play games at nearby Granite Park.

Now soccer players get to practice and compete in home games in Hughes Stadium with the confidence of home-field advantage, just like their counterparts in other sport divisions, like football and track and field.

The new soccer playing field resembles half a football field, with one portable goal moved onto the center of the province and the other in front of the football post. The coach is just relieved to finally have a field that seems more like home.

The only problem is that the field is smaller than regulation size. Stretching out 116 yards long and only 65 yards wide makes it 5 yards shorter widthwise than NCAA soccer regulations, which is 70 yards.

A playoff guide law request shows promise that the field can be approved for a playoff skirmish. College administration is hopeful.

To make the soccer field compliable with these standards, the renovation would cost $3 million. The stadium renovation would also make it necessary to bulldoze the surrounding field walls and extract the first three rows of bleachers. Also adjustments to the track would be necessary.

A smaller field not only creates an issue with playoff games, but also puts the team’s performance in jeopardy. Conditioning and practice will all be cut back by at least five yards.

“Other fields [are] 80 by 120,” says head soccer coach Jang-Ha Oh. “Offense wise… defense wise, it’s hard to change to other fields.”

Through thick and thin, year after year, Oh has seen it all with his teams.

“[I] really, really hate[d] the last five years,” says Oh. “Now we get to play on campus. You’ll never see a junior college with this great of a stadium.”

NCAA rules state that “fields of less than minimal dimensions may be used by prior written mutual consent of the competing institutions.

For now, home games will be held at Hughes stadium on and if any promise of a playoff comes along, the issue will be dealt with at that time.

“[We’re] Happy to be on campus and play regular season games on campus,” says Campbell.  “We’ll cross the bridge [hosting playoff games] when we come to it.”
