The Sacramento-based non-profit organization Low End Theory Collaborative (LETC), along with City College’s EOPS program, is hosting the first Hip-Hop Career Fair Sept.10, in conjunction with City College Welcome Day.

“[The Hip-Hop Career Fair] aims to highlight hip-hop culture in reference to careers and internship opportunities with local companies whose products and services are incorporated within the culture,” says Ken Times, EOPS counselor and City College professor.

Times, who is also a part of the LETC, has help from various City College organizations, including the Career Center and Work Experience and Internships program, to inform students of the career opportunities in the hip-hop field.

Various recording studios, graphic design firms, clothing stores and restaurants will be at the event to show an alternative view of hip-hop and its relation to higher education .

LETC will be promoting and looking for interns to work at their third annual Rock the School Bells conference in October at City College, an event where the Crocker Art Gallery, Sol Collective, local radio station V101 and All City Realty will participate.

“It is important to create formal spaces on campus that offer students the opportunity to explore their identity in relation to education, career development and community impact,” says Adam Freas, Times’ partner in LETC and City College professor. “Hip-hop being a voice for empowerment, what better medium to assist students in their exploration of education, career and community, with opportunities to develop their social capital?”

Freas hopes the event will “highlight the diversity of thought, culture and experience that our students have through engagement that is welcoming and inclusive.”

Interested students are encouraged to check out the Hip-Hop Career Day along with Welcome Day this Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on campus and check out what is offered.

“Any event that links what educators do in the classroom with the real world, and incorporates today’s culture, is one we should get behind,” says City College Public Information Officer Rick Brewer. “This type of event shows that we can work creatively to bring important information to our students and our community.”
