Happy hour hop blog

Happy hour is revered among the college crowd. Not only do you get food at a cheaper price, but you also get cheap beer; it’s like magic. The Express decided it was time to spread the magic around and see how many happy hours we could hop to in a three hour time frame.

Since our first happy hour happened to fall on Thrifty Thursday at Capital Dawg, we figured that would be a good starting place. For $2, you can get a capital, turkey or veggie dog and if you fancy them fried, corn dogs are the same price.

Much to our surprise, the $2 beer was not limited to the usual Bud Light and Coors Light that litter happy hour menus. There was the option of any of their 15 bottled beers for $2, including craft beers.

There were about 15 people there and most of them were outside as the seating is double the size of inside. With the beautiful weather outside, this was the perfect spot to enjoy a cheap lunch.

After two beers and two hot dogs, we left Capital Dawg for under $10 and were ready to head to our next wonderland.

We ended up at River Rock Tap House as we were told they had $1 Pabst and it was $4 for a 12 inch cheesy garlic pizza. While we did enjoy the dogs, we were hungry by the time we walked to River Rock and were ready for some more.

Once we got a seat, we were informed that the walk-in refrigerator was on the fritz and therefore, Pabst was not an option.

We were given a handwritten list of the other beers on tap and ended up ordering two IPA’s for $3.25 each.

Not the deal we were looking for, but we couldn’t pass up good beer. We stayed long enough to finish our beer but decided to pass on the $4 pizza. The crowd was smaller than at Capital Dawg, probably due to the lack of Pabst and the inside seating had a quieter feel to it.

At this point, it was after 6 p.m. and we knew we wouldn’t have much time to get to our next happy hour at Chicago Fire, where Pabst is $1 and the usually expensive food is much cheaper. We arrived just in time to order a couple Pabst’s before the happy hour was over.

There was cheesy bread for $2 and we decided that would feed our hunger. Digging into our food, the bartender brought over our second round before our first one was done. It is probably that customer service that packed the house. Well, that and the $1 Pabst.

In the end, our first happy hour hop was just what we thought it would be: magical.
