Former City College journalism professor Dr. Jean Stephens helped direct the path of numerous journalists who attribute their success directly to her guidance. Stephens died July 30 at age 85, from complications with diabetes.

Dr. Stephens, referred to as Doc or Doc Stephens by former students, died 25 years after she retired from her post at City College.

Managing editor for the Sacramento Bee and City College alumni Tom Negrete remembers Stephens’ passion for training journalists and her absolute determination to see her students succeed.

“She knew all the editors and publishers in Northern California and had good contacts at nearby universities and throughout the country, and she shamelessly leveraged all those contacts to help her students,” said Negrete. “If she endorsed you to an editor, she expected that editor to hire you, and if she didn’t get her way there was hell to pay with her sarcasm and knowledge of all of your professional and personal shortcomings.”

Although her own education and networking could have landed her a job at almost any university or newsroom she desired, Dr. Stephens dedicated more than 30 years to educating, motivating and encouraging students at City College.

“She’d loan you her car to drive to interviews for internships in Vacaville or the Bay Area. If you had a need, she was there to help take care of it,” said Negrete. “She could have taught at any university in the country, but she wanted to work with community college students and help those who had fewer opportunities and needed a little more guidance.”

“If she thought your talent could take you far in the business, she’d make it her job to make sure you had the complete skill set to be successful,” said Allen. “Later in my career when I’d run up against an especially difficult or demanding editor, I’d quietly thank Doc for being Doc.”

Although Stephens left no next of kin she kept in contact with many of her students even after her retirement and built lasting personal relationships.

Allen recalls visiting Stephens at her home years after completing his education at City College.

“More times than not, she would send me home with a bag of children’s books she’d set aside for our two boys,” said Allen. “Later, I’d open a book to read to the kids and with surprise, find a message to Doc from the author. These were very special gifts.”

Appreciation and admiration precede Dr. Stephens in her death. She has made a lasting impression and redirected the lives of many of her students.

“Whatever success I’ve had in newspapers, I owe it to Dr. Stephens. She was truly one of kind, and definitely made a difference in my life,” attested Negrete.
