Former Judge Vaughn Walker takes the heat

The judge who ruled against Prop 8 last August is being tossed in the pot for discussion based on the fact that the judge himself is a homosexual.

Retired U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker is accused of being bias for ruling against Prop 8 because he didn’t inform the public that he is homosexual.

Walker’s reason for voting ‘no’ on Prop 8 in the first place was purely for the simple fact that it violates homosexual’s constitutional rights, and had nothing to do with him being homosexual. If asked point blank if he was gay, prior to the ruling of Prop 8, he probably wouldn’t have denied it. If he lied, then that quite possibly could have been reason to be angry.

No one ever hears about a heterosexual being told to list their sexual preference in order to vote on controversial issues, so why should a homosexual?

According to a 2011 poll, 3.8 percent of the American population is self-identified homosexual. That is an estimate of about 9 million people. They are indeed a minority group, and yet are treated like second-class citizens.

Anyone could have bias to this situation either way. For instance, take the religious group called Protect Marriage. The argument that they have come up with is that the American people have a right to a fair judicial process, free from even the appearance of bias or prejudice. Who is this ‘fair judicial process’ referring to exactly? Certainly not for the homosexuals, who just want to be given the same opportunities as everyone else.

According to Walker, morals play a huge part in the reasoning to deny rights to gays and lesbians, and the evidence shows that Prop 8 endorses a subliminal, moral view that same-sex couples are inferior to opposite sex couples.

For California being such a liberal state, with issues like this, we are nonetheless quite conservative. Religion and bigotry have absolutely no place in the realm of politics, or in this case, a court of law.
