Former administration of justice professor dies

Professor Robert Austin Tate Jr., former City College Professor.

Robert Tate, a retired Sacramento City College professor, died Aug. 31 in Roseville. He was 73 years old.

Tate taught administration of justice courses at City College for 30 years.

Robert “Bob” Austin Tate Jr. was born in Presque Isle, Maine, in 1936. He served for four years in the Air Force and then earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Sacramento State University in 1963.

Tate was a probation officer with the Sacramento County Probation Department from 1967–1975, and while he worked there he earned a master’s degree in psychology from Chapman College.

Tate began teaching administration of justice at City College in 1975. He lived in Yuba City during most of his 30-year teaching career and commuted to Sacramento for classes.

Colleagues and students remember him as intelligent, interesting and humorous. “He was dedicated, emphasizing
the ethical values that are very critical in law enforcement,” said administration of justice Professor Georgeann McKee. “He helped countless students get started in the probation field.”

He is survived by Jane, his wife of 22 years, and two daughters, Kimberly, a recent high school graduate, and Jasmine, currently in the fifth-grade.
