City College Professor, Linda Stroh, passed away Aug. 20 after a long and hard-fought battle with breast cancer.

Stroh, 66, had taught business, economics and statistics at City College for 27 years.

“I’ve lost a quality colleague,” said economics professor, Gregory Rose, someone who worked closely with Stroh throughout his 22-year career at City College. He was someone who Stroh confided in first during the early discovery of her illness.

“When I heard she wouldn’t be returning for the fall semester, I knew in my mind that something wasn’t right,” Rose said. “Linda was a very dedicated and hardworking member of the faculty staff on campus. She enforced high but achievable expectations for her students, and would not compromise rigorous curriculum to make things easier.”

According to Rose, Stroh was well liked and respected by faculty members. She was described as personable, though fairly reserved and introverted, but would open up once she got to know an individual.

Stroh was previously president of the Academic Senate for four years. She also received an award from City College’s Emeriti (retired faculty) for her years and service devoted to the campus.

“What I will remember most about her is her pursuit of excellence and her care and commitment to the college, “ Rose said. “Not only that but she had the best jewelry collection of any faculty member,” he said as he browsed his memories of her.

Stroh is survived by her husband, her parents, daughter, two sisters, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Nearly 2000 nurses and union members marched Thursday, Aug. 26, on the California State Capitol as part of a California Nurses Association staged protest of the Republican gubernatorial candidate in commemoration of the right to vote for women.

The CNA planned protest of Meg Whitman took place on the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which introduced women’s suffrage.

“Meg Whitman has not cared enough to vote,” said organizer and registered nurse Malinda Markowitz. “We do care. Let us send a message to Whitman and all her corporate backers and Wall Street that we will continue to fight for the values of the suffragettes, and the values of nurses and all working people today. That is our message today.”

The march began at the Sacramento Convention Center and moved slowly through downtown, emptying out on the West Steps of the Capitol, where men and women dressed in 1920s themed garb handed out faux-newspapers called “The California Voter” while shouting, “Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Meg Whitman hasn’t voted for 28 years!”

The shouts and cheers of nurses and union workers rang through the open area, bedecked with a huge tent over thousands of chairs. The speakers all stepped up to the podium, each armed with a quote from a famous suffragette.

The ceremonies also featured a skit depicting a regal Whitman, tiara included, making anti-working class remarks with her two suit-clad friends: Mr. Goldman and Mr. Sachs. The figures, taking their name from controversial investment corporation Goldman Sachs, were meant to portray the rampant culture of corporate corruption. Elizabeth Perkins-Sahlin, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Cady-Stanton, first president of the National Women’s Suffrage Association, also made an address.

The presentations were punctuated by fiery words from workers of all walks. A ferocious speech from the president of the California Teacher’s Association, David Sanchez, illustrated the frustrations of teachers and many other union employees.

“We want a governor who understands what’s best for the people of California and the future of the state — the children of the state,” Sanchez said. “We want a governor who will work for the people and with the people, and, Meg Whitman, that’s not you.”

City College students are now dropped within a day of not paying course fees because of a stricter enforcement of the admissions policy

“It gives a chance to students who really want to take a class to get in,” said Admissions and Records Supervisor Kim Goff. “It also gets students to pay fees at a reasonable time.”

Goff said that the Los Rios policy hasn’t changed from previous semesters but it will be enforced more rigorously than before.

Go to www.losrios.edu/lrc/feepay2010.php to read the enrollment policy.

Courtesy of Scott Free Productions.

When I saw a recent screening of “Cyrus,” I was a little surprised to see several people trickling out as the film went on. I couldn’t understand why these people would walk out of such a great movie, but then it dawned on me. These people were expecting what the movie’s marketing had led them to believe: a zany comedy cut from the same cloth as “Superbad” and “Step Brothers,”—“Cyrus” is a far cry from those films.

The movie is about a middle-aged man named John (John C. Reilly) who is trying to pull himself out of the proverbial gutter while also courting the beautiful Molly (Marisa Tomei). They begin a relationship and John finds out that Molly has a grown son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill), living at home. Cyrus feels threatened by John’s presence and starts to do whatever he can to sabotage the new relationship.

There is not one weak performance to be found in this film. Hill’s Cyrus is genuinely creepy and Reilly’s performance is much more subtle than his recent work. Tomei is great as the confused mother who just wants what’s best for both her son and her relationship.

The shaky, hand-held cinematography and natural acting let the viewer forget about the sticky floors of the theater and that one jackass sitting a few rows up that has been texting the entire time. The film doesn’t necessarily demand to be experienced in theaters but it is a perfect date movie.

The only real problem with “Cyrus” is how the film has been marketed. Both Riley and Hill have been in very successful raunchy, R-rated comedies, so it makes sense that Scott Free Productions, the studio behind the film, would market “Cyrus” as the same thing. What they don’t tell you is that the film is understated and sweet. “Cyrus” has heart, which is something that “Step Brothers” sorely lacked.

“Cyrus” was released June 18 and can be found playing at the Tower Theatre and Century Stadium 14 in Sacramento. For pricing information or further details call Tower Theatre at (916) 442-0985 or Century Stadium 14 at (916) 922-4241.

The question on our minds is whether or not that same kind of cutting could be seen at City College. This is a documentary on the process we here at SacCityExpress.com went through to publish the story.

Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo: these are just a few of the artists who would enshrine the surrealism movement of the early 20th century into the annals of art history. Their bold investigations into the symbolism of the subconscious influenced countless artists to pick up the brush and paint something more real than still life or portraiture could afford. Nineteen-year-old, City College student Hannah De La Rosa is one of these artists.

De La Rosa, an art major who’s been attending City College since the fall semester of 2008, says that her interest in art became apparent at a very young age.

“There’s a picture of me, 2 years old, in a Raiders shirt drawing on a plate,” De La Rosa says. “It was a paper plate and I was drawing on it with a big old crayon.”

Despite her young inclinations toward art, it wasn’t until she was older that she decided to truly become an artist. According to De La Rosa, an introduction to surrealism was the catalyst for her new found aspiration.

“I started really getting into Frida Kahlo and Salvidor Dali around the age of 9 and 10, and I just decided I wanted to be an artist,” De La Rosa says. “Ever since then I’ve been painting, drawing, doing whatever I could with my hands.”

De La Rosa says that when she first saw the works of Dali, she understood that art could be much more than mere depictions of real objects. Ever since then, her work has worked to
reflect her inside out.

De La Rosa’s room, which also doubles as a cramped studio she shares with her younger sister, is strewn with innumerable canvasses, stacked, stored or lined up along the wall. Upon the canvasses, bright colors, symbolic and personal figures, relevant to De La Rosa, make up the bulk of her compositions.

“It makes you think more than if it was a picture of a cup or a person, you already know what it is, but if it’s something that came up from inside of them, then its something you have to think harder about,” De La Rosa says describing her style.

Nineteen-year-old City College student and boyfriend of De La Rosa,Zane Singleton says that it is surprising how good her artwork is, despite her lack of formal training.
“She hasn’t really had schooling that much— she just had a couple of classes,” says Singleton. “She just has a lot of raw talent.”

Though De La Rosa says she’s not a fan of art classes, which she believes turns art into a chore, her current instructor Eric Wood has helped reinforce her enthusiasm to create. She says that unlike other courses, his class has made working on art an even more fun endeavor

“She always dives into the assignment really well and she has a really, really nice clean rendering style,” Wood says. “I feel like I’m pushing her to be a little bit better and I’m kind of curious about seeing what she has going on in her show,” says Wood. De La Rosa will be displaying her art work downtown at 1819 K S/1treet on April 10 at Second

Los Angeles’ Fishtank Ensemble kicked off a run of California dates on May 12 to support the group’s third studio album, “Woman in Sin.”

Frontwoman Ursula Knudson is a native Sacramentan and is eager to perform with her band at Sacramento’s Firehouse 5 dance studio on May 18.

“We did the Sacramento World Music & Dance festival for two years but up until now, we haven’t found a venue to play,” Knudson said. “There are venues, but they’re mostly for rock. I know, like any town, there’s a decent-sized contingency of people in Sacramento that love world music.”

Knudson said she feels that spaces such as the Firesouse 5 can be the catalyst for a new kind of music scene.

Bands such as Cake helped give Sacramento the reputation of being “the next Seattle,” and Knudson was there to witness it first hand.

“I’m from the 90s, so I loved Cake,” said Knudson, speaking of growing up with the Sacramento music scene. “I remember sneaking out when I was 16 to the Cattle Club for their CD release party.”

Fishtank’s sound, which has been described as cross-pollinated gypsy music, has its feet deeply rooted in world and folk music. Their new album’s eponymous track, “Woman in Sin,” sets things off with a blisteringly fast tempo, bass lines that would melt the face off of John Entwistle (Google him) and Knudson’s fantastic, nearly inhuman vocal range.

Knudson reflected on the recording process of her band’s latest effort. Despite a mastering mix-up, the experience was a positive one.

“Seeing the whole process through the last six months, from the first musical ideas to then executing them,” Knudson said. “Everything came out perfect.”

You can catch Fishtank on their C.D. release tour this Tuesday, May 18, in the Firehouse 5 at 2014 B 9th St. The show starts at 7:00 P.M.

To listen to music from the band, check out their website at www.fishtankensemble.com.

You’ve probably seen your classes contract exponentially in this long and grueling spring semester.

Well, in honor of this semester, we here at SacCityExpress.com have compiled a playlist of songs that have been stuck in our heads the entire semester, helped us get through the long nights of editing copy, researching, setting up interviews with elusive subjects, studying for midterms, procrastinating on math homework, preserving the first amendment, you know, the usual. In short, it’s a soundtrack for this semester. Play it as you think back upon these past few months.

Click on the link to hear the song! Also, check out our Blip.fm page for the full playlist.

I live and breathe metal, and it has really been what has helped me get through a lot this semester. Channeling my frustrations into those blast beats, I think I’ve averted more than a few blow ups. Unfortunately, I would have to say that the song of my semester would have to be Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok.” It’s that shot of instant party mix, that carefree but “f**k you” attitude that comes with youth, all rolled into a silly little joint that you would regret enjoying the morning after. I caught myself a few times on the commute to and from City College blasting this song that the stations would not stop playing. Don’t lie, I know you did the same at least a few times yourself. -Cecilio Padilla, Online Editor in Chief

“Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd
This song reminds me of this semester in Journalism 406 (Online Production) because it was my first semester taking journalism classes, which excited me and gave me a boost of adrenaline which produced a sense of numbness. But at the same time I was excited for what was to come, but I was also comfortable with what I was doing and happy with my results. -Chris McClain, Online Sports Editor

Don't jump! The whole semester felt as though we were heading for a ledge with no one trying to stop us. Spent more time talking people down than concentrating on work, but no one seemed to care. -Allison Valenzuela, Photo Editor

“45” by Shinedown
Why, because running a business and going to school while trying to get into the right mindset to compete at the state level for California wrestling, was all hard enough. Now throw in being webmaster and reporter .It was like having a gun to my head at all times, where it was, Do this and this or you are going to be s.o.l.. -John David Reynolds, Webmaster

“In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins
This semester with two journalism classes, I felt always on the edge of something exciting and big, as if I’d been waiting for it my whole life. And, as I’ve been waiting years to get the experience I’ve gained this semester, this song captures all my moments of excitement, anxiety and acceptance of all that my journalism courses will bring me. -Exie Frazier, Staff Writer

“Paperback Writer” by the The Beatles
That is a fun song about a writer and for me this semester has been really fun. The enthusiasm from the editors and instructors illuminated and filled me as well. -Sarah Herrera, Staff Writer

18 JACC awards should be pretty self-explanatory. It’s because we had a long and interesting semester of assignments and visits to the Bee and KCRA 3. Also it’s near the end of the semester and we feel we have accomplished quite a bit and that makes us champions. -Jacob Clark, Staff Writer

It can get kinda dicey, reporting important news fairly and accurately on a continuous basis. A lot of things can go wrong if you’re not tediously careful, however. It’s not just our love for telling a story, but the fact that we actually care about what we are covering, which has us coming back for more. -Christopher Geanakos, Multimedia Editor

The song makes me think of the fun people and memories I have made this semester. It also reminds me to go back and actually manage my time better in order to get more schoolwork done, so as to not have any regrets in the end.-Wesley Hall, Staff Writer

“Invisible Seas” by Panacea
The word Panacea means a remedy for all disease or ills; cure-all. 2. an answer or solution for all problems or difficulties. The song that I chose is one that I listened to a lot this semester. It is the intro song in a 20 minute documentary short I completed late Feb. 2010. I enjoy the inspirational lyrics, melodic beat and chorus. It is a song that keeps me motivated and hopeful for a bright future! -La Tisha Clayton, Staff Writer

It’s frantic, loud, messy, cynical, and hits you hard from the first chord, whether you’re ready for it or not. The chorus also describes how I’ve felt about everything I’ve started or tried to do this semester, and the ticking clock signifying my leaving City College and Sacramento in August. -Matt Gerring, Multimedia Editor

“California English” by Vampire Weekend
Because of this semester in Journalism 406, I’ve taken an interest in NPR and Sacramento’s Capital Public Radio. While listening to NPR, I heard an interview with Vampire Weekend and really like their music. This songs is a bit chaotic, clever and upbeat. -Josselin Basaldu, Online News Editor

This song’s lyrics remind me of how much our site has evolved over the past two semesters, how we gamble (so to speak) constantly to improve our product and so far everything has really paid off. I could be more proud of both the print staff and the web staff and I couldn’t be more excited for next semester. -Ian McDonald, Entertainment Editor

Although the song appears to be about paraphernalia, it’s about the people, communications, the stories and being surrounded by intellect. I feel that way about this semester and everyone I have worked with both on the Express and Mainline. -Eydie Mendoza, Staff Writer

“Time” by Pink Floyd
It seems like most of this semester has been practice in never being able to find the time for things that needed doing, or, at random intervals, frittering away the long hours of days on end in which there was nothing to do. That and deftly (beautifully, if you ask me) talking my way out of things that I found I suddenly and unexpectedly did not have time for. It’s true that it all seems to go by faster the older you get, in my experience, and while I’m not old enough yet to turn around and notice decades getting away from me… I’m sure it will be pretty soon, at this rate. -Benjamin Stone, Social Media Editor

The Federal Aviation Administration, looking to fill an anticipated need for future flight controllers, has chosen City College as one of five new sites nationally for an air traffic control training program that will begin in the fall 2010 semester.

“We are thrilled to have been chosen for this highly selective training program,” said Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Brice Harris in a recent news release. “The credit goes to Sacramento City College’s historic and outstanding aeronautics program.”

The FAA has estimated that more than 14,000 air traffic controllers will leave the nation’s work force by 2015 due to retirements, promotions and other forms of attrition. The median annual income for controllers is $122,800, according to the FAA.

Days and times for courses in aircraft dispatcher, airframe and powerplant maintenance, and other aspects of air traffic control will be announced and registration will be available approximately July 1, according to Dean of Advance Technology Donnetta Webb. Classes will be held at City College’s McClellan facility, as well as the main campus.

To meet the program’s demands, City College has hired a new instructor, Scott J. Miller is a former City College student who has 25 plus years experience in the aviation industry as a commercial pilot and pilot instructor. Miller holds FAA certifications for private and commercial pilot, aircraft dispatcher and certificated flight instructor. He also has a master’s of aviation science, with a specialization in aviation and aerospace operations, from Embry Riddle University, and a Bachelor of Science in aeronautics, with a concentration in flight operations and business management, from San Jose State University.

The FAA Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative was first launched in 1990 to help recruit candidates for terminal and air traffic controller positions. The AT-CTI curriculum provides appropriate education, experience, and training which meet the basic requirements for the terminal and en route air traffic occupations. This may result in AT-CTI graduates being permitted to bypass the initial five-week air traffic basics training when they report to the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City.

No jobs are promised to students, but from fiscal years 2005 until 2009 over 3,000, or 41 percent, of air traffic controllers hired graduated from an AT-CTI school.

“This is another example of our district offering programs unique in our community and that lead to excellent, well-paying jobs,” said Kay Albiani, the Los Rios Community College District Board president in a recent news release.

Harris also acknowledged the Sacramento Metro Chamber’s Cap to Cap (Capitol to Capitol) for its visits to Washington and discussions with FAA officials and elected representatives in securing the program.

The other four sites named for air traffic control training programs are Florida Institute of Technology, Texas State Technical College, Western Michigan University and Hesston College, bringing the total programs to 36 nationwide.

For more information on the air traffic control training program, go to www.scc.losrios.edu/x58951.xml or call the Advanced Technology Division at 916-558-2491.
