City College dropped a close game Feb.11 when Cosumnes River College outplayed the Panthers in the closing minutes, handing the Panthers a 76-85 home loss.

Win the win, the Hawks have won nine of their last 10 games and are 21-5 on the season, best in the Big 8. The Panthers, now 5-5 in conference play and 12-12 on the season, are firmly on the bubble for next month’s playoff tournament.

The Panthers played up-tempo ball in the first half, getting some easy points. By halftime, the team had a four-point lead. Forward Derrick Rhodes led the way for the Panthers with 13 first half points. Rhodes would also be the team’s high scorer with 19 in the game.

City College gave up the lead early in the second half but was able to keep itself in the game.

With about six minutes to go, the Hawks spread their lead to five. The Panthers would never catch up.

Strong play from Hawks star duo Jaycob Velasco and AJ Bridges proved too much for the Panther defense. A five-point deficit with 30 seconds remaining forced the Panthers to stop the clock with a foul. The Hawks made five of six free throws during that stretch to give them a nine-point victory.

“They just made plays,” said Panthers head coach Andrew Jones. “They’re 21-5 for a reason—we lost to a good team.”

With only three remaining games, the Panthers will need to win at least two to make the postseason.
