The Panthers men’s basketball team although down a key player Feb. 18 defeated the San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs 81-71.
The Panthers entered Tuesday’s game against the third-place Mustangs without Big 8 scoring leader Bobby Barnes (calf). The Panthers would still push past the Mustangs though, thanks to strong play from the backcourt and key contributions from role players.
Behind by five in the opening minutes of the first half, the Panthers didn’t stay there long. Strong play from swingman Antwoine Davis (17 first-half points) and clutch three-point shooting (six first-half 3-pointers) brought the Panthers into intermission leading by seven at 43-36.

The Mustangs continued to hang around with aggressive play in the key. Delta forward Jarell Green (17 points in the game) led the charge for the Mustangs.
With 1:31 to go, three from point guard Kenny Woodard (one of four in the game for Woodard) stretched the Panthers’ lead from two to five at 74-69.
The game remained competitive as the Mustangs put heavy pressure on the Panthers.

With 43.6 seconds to go in a five-point game Davis found forward Derek Rhodes open on the perimeter. Rhodes—the team’s most consistent three-point shooter—drained the shot, delivering a fatal blow to the Mustangs.
“I just tried to keep moving and knock it down when I found the open spots,” said Rhodes.
The Panthers would go on to score four more points in the final 43 seconds for a 81-71 victory.
In his second strong outing in as many outings, Woodard made shots in key situations throughout the game. Of those shots were four of the teams 10 three-pointers in the contest.
Davis (second in the Big 8 in scoring with 17.5 points per game) had 28 points and was the game’s leading scorer. This was Davis’ highest scoring night since putting up 31 against Contra Costa Dec.31.
“We just played as a team and we really shared the ball a lot,” said Davis. “It was fun—we were just trying to have fun instead of being about ourselves.”
The Panthers will face Sierra College Friday in a win-or-go-home situation. The Panthers (6-7) need a win to stay on the playoff bubble, come selection day. A loss will likely eliminate them from consideration.
