Panthers’ softball team lost the second game of a double-header to the Cabrillo College Seahawks 12-4 Feb. 15, and took a 1-1 split for the day.

The dark gloomy sky was appropriate for the Panthers’ performance against the Seahawks. City College gave up 12 hits and committed four errors during the game.

“I didn’t think we played real well today at all,” said Panthers’ Head Coach Tim Kiernan. “It was a sloppy game.”

Panthers’ starting pitcher Erikka Burke got off to a shaky start in the first inning. Burke loaded the bases twice, walking two batters and giving up two singles.

The first run for the Seahawks came on a wild pitch by Burke. The pitch allowed a runner on third to come home. Burke got out of her jam early, allowing two runs in the first inning.

“We just couldn’t locate our pitches today,” said Kiernan.

Down by two runs early, Panthers’ third baseman Morgan Green quickly got her team on the board with a lead off home run.

City College would add another run in the first to tie the game on a Morgan Winton RBI double. This would be the closest the Panthers would be able to keep the game.

In the second inning, Burke continued to struggle with her control and loaded the bases once again. Burke overcame the situation as before to allow one run to score in the second.

Seahawks’ starting pitcher Taylor Tessier tossed a shutdown second inning to keep her team in the lead.
In the third inning, the Panthers’ team errors caught up to them. The Seahawks would add three more runs. This forced Kiernan to make a move to the bullpen and bring in Meghan Wantz.

Wantz too would struggle from the circle, giving up a 3-run home run in the fourth inning. From this, the Seahawks opened their lead to six runs after four innings.

“I think part of the problem is the long counts the pitchers are putting the defense in,” said Kiernan. “You sit back on your heels.”

The Panthers would add a run in the fifth inning on a pinch-hit home run by Kristina Morris. It would be too little too late though. The Seahawks had pushed their lead to 12-3 before the home run.

After allowing 10 hits, two of them home runs, Panthers’ offense could not overcome poor pitching and even worse defensive play.

“I think our offense played good,” said Kiernan. “You just can’t give up 12 hits and walks.”

The game stopped after five innings because of large lead for a final score of 12-4.
