Fair Warning

City College has recently incorporated social networking strategies in order to deter crime on campus. A system called Wide Area Rapid Notification, now in place, issues warnings to students of any campus crime. Photo by ||Kate Paloy|| [email protected]

In early February, Los Rios District police department issued a campus crime bulletin saying that a female City College student was the victim of sexual battery and false imprisonment on campus.

City College uses the school homepage, Facebook page, campus TVs, e-mail and text messaging as technology alert services to ensure immediate safety awareness and precautions to students and faculty through the use of a system called WARN, Wide Area Rapid Notification.

“We’re always aware that [assaults] can happen [on campus], so that when [they do] happen, we’re very prepared. We immediately go into our response, which is notification and investigation,” says City College Public Information Officer Amanda Davis.

The February crime assault notification was able to help campus police get a lead to the investigation, according to Davis.

Davis said that WARN is able to contact and issue warnings through the use of phone and voicemail, text messaging and email to help update students and faculty about a campus crisis, such as a sudden earthquake, a fire, an explosion, or if there was an active shooter on campus.

“We have data that shows us that almost all of our students have a cell phone, almost all of our students have an e-mail,” said Davis. “As technology becomes more and more available to us, we assess its usefulness and its practicality for the college and for our students, and we adopt these [technology alert services] as appropriate.”

When adopting new technologies to communicate with students and faculty, the college focuses on researching a particular technology’s effectiveness and usability, according to Davis.

According to the WARN website, “Staying ahead of new security challenges requires proactive and cooperative planning, innovation and advanced technologies.”

Davis said, “[WARN] isn’t something we use a lot, but just like with all of our emergency preparedness, we test run our emergency procedures frequently, multiple times throughout the year.”

The WARN system has been in place for two years and is part of City College’s continuing efforts to improve campus safety and the campus’s immediate emergency response, Davis said.

She recommended that to be kept in the college’s information loop, students should regularly update their campus contact information.

“I would definitely want to let students know and make sure your phone numbers and your email addresses are up to date and accurate [with the school],” said Davis. “Check your e-mail, go to the website, ‘like’ us on Facebook because you’ll get updates there as well.”
