Both the City College men’s and women’s track and field teams have been working all season to get to this point: the Big 8 Conference Championships.

In the practices leading up to the trials, men’s head coach Rob Dewar has his Panthers working a lot on speed, starts and relay timing.

“We’re starting to come around,” said Dewar of the team’s preparation heading into the championships. “We’re going to start putting things together and see what we can do.”

Although Dewar feels the team is too short-handed to win the conference outright, he feels that there are a lot of runners that can succeed and go far individually.

City’s 4×100 team is ranked sixth in Northern California and fourth in the Big 8, a conference which currently has four teams ranked in the Top 6 in the NorCal standings in the event. Kamil Jones will be running both the 4×100 and the 4×400 relays for the Panthers.

Jones still doesn’t know every event he will compete in, but he does have Top 10 Big 8 ranks in three individual events this season. Jones’ victory time of 55.59 seconds at the Chico State Wildcat Invitational March 10 helped qualify him for the NorCal Trials in the 400 hurdles.

His 22.07 output in the 200-meter dash gave him a fifth-place rank in the region. He also ranks sixth in the Big 8 in the 400 (50.30), but he’s mostly anticipating the 400 hurdles because that’s where he believes his biggest strength is.

“I expect to do well,” said Jones. “I have my mindset together. I have the things I need to work on, so I’m excited to go out there and perform.”

Dewar said he expects sophomore thrower Trevor Holt to be a big performer for the Panthers. Holt is ranked seventh in conference in both the shot put (11.97 meters) and the discus throw (36.30), and ranks second in the hammer throw (49.49). Holt has captured two first-place finishes in the hammer this season.

Freshman Noah Spickelmier will be going into the championships with the hopes of improving in the 5,000-kilometer run. He said he first ran the event April 13 at American River College.  “It’s been a lot of fun,” said Spickelmier, who ranks 18th in the event at 17 minutes, 4.85 seconds.  “The workouts are more put together, and it’s been a lot harder, but because of that I’ve been able to progress.”

Marissa Avendano’s women’s team collectively put together a winning performance, taking four events at the American River College Distance Carnival April 14–15.

The relay teams took first in both the 4×100 (48.14 seconds) and the 4×400 (3 minutes, 59.38 seconds). Sianna Willis took the top spot while setting a personal best of 12.27 in the 100-yard dash, and Janessa Moses won the shot put, also with a personal best of 12.40 meters at ARC.

Daryia Greene took second in the 800, Kiara Flenoid took fourth in both the 200 and 400, and Alyssa McAlister took fifth in the 100 hurdles.

Jasmine Loyola and Perla Gonzalez-Rodriguez took third and fifth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Each ranks inside the Top 10 in the conference.

Riley Cannon, who ranks in the Top 4 in three different throwing events, took third in the shot put at ARC. Heading into the Big 8 meet, Cannon’s conference ranks are third in the shot put, second in the discus and fourth in the hammer.

The Panther women’s team captured the Big 8 Conference Championship last season, claiming first place in five different events. It was City’s first conference title for women’s track since 2009.

At last year’s Big 8 Championships, Moses placed fifth overall in the shot put. She currently ranks second in the event in the conference.

Willis finished eighth in the 100 in last year’s conference meet and fifth in the 200 while two of her teammates, Jazmine Smith and Lonsha Bradford, took first and second, respectively.

The 2018 Big 8 Conference trials are April 23 and the finals are April 26.
