Editor’s note: Midterms, migraines and misery, oh my

Fall has arrived; the changes in the season are evident. The air is cooler, windows are actually closed in the evenings and the dog days of summer have been laid to rest. Typically, I find this changing of the guard a good thing, especially in Sacramento, whose summers can sometimes border on being downright oppressive.

October doesn’t just signify the changing seasons; it also signifies a change in energy, at least on campus. Lackluster students are forced to kick into gear. Nervous energy abounds as they rush to catch up on information that they, more than likely, should already have learned.

Midterms have been impending for students at City College since the beginning of October. If this semester is like every other I’ve been enrolled in, it is very likely that a lot of students will be disappearing from class rosters at an alarming rate. Those who remain may come to feel like characters out of the “Left Behind” series as they ask themselves, “Where is everybody?” It is more than likely that the majority of these academic survivors came well prepared.

It is funny how painfully easy it is to be both prepared and unprepared for midterms and finals. After all, the answers to every test given in any course will have already been covered in lecture or assigned reading. But procrastination is like academic kryptonite, and compounds the simple act of studying into an Olympian feat. This, I believe, is endemic of short-term thinking.

It is easy to get sucked into a short-term mentality. Our lives are dictated by routine and pattern. It takes a conscious effort to see the bigger picture and often, when we do, the revelations are fleeting as the doldrums of routine takes their toll.

Students need to be mindful that midterms and finals are not just two far-flung dates on the calendar. When the days tick by as fast as they do, studying must be taken very seriously and not thrown on the backburner. I know it sounds like an ‘eat your broccoli’ type of statement, but as simple as it seems to be, it is apparent that many do not take heed of it.

For those students who are struggling through this October’s midterms, take this fall as a learning experience. It may seem easy in the short term to negate studying for classes, especially when there are more fun things that can be done, but it ultimately comes with a price down the line.
