Does voting matter?

This Nov. 6, America will find itself picking a side. The side who wins will lead the country for four years.

Barack Obama, current president and Democrat, faces challenger Mitt Romney, the Republican governor leading the voice of the right wing.

This is another year, and another battle generating more division among citizens.

Ignorance, bickering and frivolous accusations dominate the news circuit. Either way, these candidates have not demonstrated that they are capable of leading America.

We voted Obama into office to reduce the debt and unemployment. Unemployment has gone down to 7.8 percent this year, as of most recent reports by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but the national debt has risen to $16 trillion, according to the candidates.

Didn’t like the Patriot Act? Then you probably didn’t like the National Defense Authorization Act, passed under the Obama Administration on Dec. 31, 2011, which allows the government to detain terrorism suspects, even Americans, indefinitely without due process, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Mitt Romney doesn’t shape up that well, either.

Coming from a background of a successful businessman, appearing misinformed about the proportion of Americans who don’t pay taxes, calling them the 47 percent that he doesn’t care about, earlier this year.

The news about his ties to financial equity firm Bain Capital is also troubling, since it makes profits off actions such as closing down domestic factories and shipping jobs to China.

Sensata Tecnhologies, a company controlled by Bain Capital, has done such a thing in Freeport, Ill. A video on the Huffington Post and YouTube details the workers’ despair, with firsthand testimony about the shut down.

Though Romney doesn’t operate the company, he and his wife have substantial financial interests in it and he stands to profit from the Freeport sale, according to the Quad-City Times, an online newspaper.

To add a cherry on top, the New York Times reports that Obama owns some stock in Sensata Technologies as well.

America has a choice between two different presidential candidates of differing political parties, who’ve each implemented policies that have devastated the economy and passed bills that have restricted citizens’ rights.

Party affiliation does not indicate a candidate’s potential level of quality, and while I think Obama is a far better man to have in the White House, I do not think either candidate will benefit America greatly.

I don’t know of any politician who can do this.

In the end, regardless of whom you vote for, voting isn’t a right, it’s a privilege. At this point, however, it feels like a hollow privilege because neither of these candidates is what America needs.
