With each passing semester, the City College campus changes more and more. This semester has brought a new Fine Arts building, the beginning stages of reconstruction on the auditorium, and the addition of cutting edge new courses, among numerous other changes.

Accompanying a pair of newly offered aeronautics classes this semester is its new and highly accomplished instructor.

Scott Miller, a former City College student and long standing air craft pilot and instructor, is the newest addition to the aeronautics faculty. At 46 years old, Miller has been flying nearly half of his life.

“It all started when I was a little kid living close to Sacramento Executive Airport watching airplanes fly around,” Miller says. “I thought it would be a fun thing to do.”

Miller received his private pilot’s license from the Sacramento Executive Airport at the age of 18. Shortly afterward, he enrolled at City College for three years, before obtaining his bachelor’s in aeronautics from San Jose State University.

After receiving his degree, Miller taught light aircraft piloting part time at Trade Winds Aviation in San Jose at before taking on a job with Northwest Airlink, the regional carrier for Northwest Airlines, from 1995 to 2010. Miller says he fell into his initial teaching gig by accident.

“For someone that wants to become a professional pilot at the airline, if they don’t go into the military, their first job as a civilian is usually as an instructor in light aircraft,” Miller says. “I took that job with the express intent of just getting my hours and moving on and never looking back.”

Some of Miller’s colleagues share in this enthusiasm for this new chapter in his career.

“We’re very lucky to have acquired him from the airlines because he’s very technically proficient,” says aeronautics professor Phil Cyprett. “He was just what we were looking for and we’re very lucky to have found him.”

This semester Miller is teaching Flight Tech 304, Safety and Human Factors in Aviation, and Flight Tech 330, Aircraft Aerodynamics, at City College’s Aeronautics facilities at McClellan Airbase.

During a recent class, nearly 50 students sat attentively as Miller discussed topics ranging from the functionality of eye cones to common optical illusions pilots may encounter.

“He’s really approachable and has some cool background that really makes what he says come together,” says first time aeronautics student Mark Dalforno.

Although students in Miller’s courses are learning about many technical aspects of the aeronautics field, he looks forward to giving students something else walk away with.

“I would hope they take away the understanding of the trust and the teamwork that aviation requires to function,” Miller says. “The airlines and air traffic control systems in the United States runs on trust and it runs on teamwork.”
