As another year comes to a close, City College’s athletic community gets in gear to start another batch of seasons, and to yet again select new male and female athletes of the year for 2009-2010.
Whenever a year of sports ends, coaches analyze their season and players to see who would not only best represent their teams but the school as a whole.
Athletes of the year not only have to worry about excelling on the playing field, but also in the classroom. And that’s exactly what City College’s male athlete of the year for 2009-2010 says he does.
Cody Allen, the recipient of City College’s Male Athlete of the Year award, returned to Sacramento with hopes of playing college football, getting his degree in social science and becoming a firefighter one day, all after being selected in the Major League Baseball Draft by the Florida Marlins in 2005.
One of Allen’s coaches, men’s track and field head coach Rob Dewar, says he is not surprised to see Allen receive the award, but he knows just how special it is.
“Winning athlete of the year award is the ‘cherry on top of the ice cream’,” said Dewar, “but it comes naturally and is a real honor to even just be nominated and just as satisfying as winning.”
Allen started sports at age 6, becoming skilled in both football and baseball for over 16 years. Most recently, Allen has added track to his list of accomplishments.
After encouragement from his girlfriend at the time, Allen went out for track and had an instant connection to the javelin.
“Cody really came out as a rookie having no clue about anything, but he’s a great athlete and a great learner,” said Dewar.

Dewar said Allen has what he calls the “goods” and has great potential that he’s shown from the very first meet, to the very last.
Allen is leading the Panther football team as a captain of the team for his second year this season, both as a player and as a captain.
“Cody’s key to success is his ‘I don’t care’ attitude and his will to be phenomenal,” said City College football head coach Dannie Walker.
Allen’s ability to motivate and push his team reflects his success as a team leader and captain. Walker said Allen’s challenge this season is to not let his confidence turn into a negative and to stretch his limits. Allen says his success in football is having all the experience he has as a competitor.
Allen has been able to use his competitive experience to be successful in his new sport, the javelin throw. While trying out for track, Allen said he got lucky that javelin is so close to baseball and that he fell in love.
Sports have always been apart of Allen’s life and will continue to be with the help and support from not only his family, but his teammates and coaching staffs as well.
Allen returns to his position at quarterback on the football team and plans to rejoin the track team in the spring. In returning to the javelin throw, Allen hopes to improve his footwork and technique this year and learn as much as he can, always striving hoping to get better.
Allen hopes to excel at the javelin, and possibly make an attempt to qualify for an event higher up, such as the Olympics. “And who knows? Maybe even an Olympic trial someday,” says Allen.
