City College’s Quad was packed with potential club members and all 32 clubs during The Club Day event, which took place on Sept. 27 in an effort to raise awareness about clubs and sign up potential members.
Clubs from all sorts of backgrounds and beliefs—like religious groups including the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and Latter Day Saints Student Association Club—to foreign culture representation with the Hmong, Korean, Russian, Chinese, and Latino clubs, filled the quad to present information about their respective focus.
Other clubs at the event included the Sac City Freethinkers, Business & Math clubs, Science & Technology Club, and political groups such as the Obama for President Club. There was even a booth for signing up to vote in this fall’s election. Phi Theta Kappa, City College’s honors society, was also present, as well as some off-campus groups.
During the college hour, from noon-1 p.m., entertainment came from the Sac City Dance Club and City Colleges’ spirit and cheer clubs.
Physics and astronomy professor Doug Copely, an adviser for the newly formed Science and Technology Club, was on hand with his telescope enticing students with a direct view of the sun and its volatile solar flares.
Melissa Jones, 23, mathematics major, was excited when she took a look through the telescope.
“I have never seen anything like this,” said Jones. “It’s awesome!”
Anne Zavala, 28, Anthropology major, the president of the Science and Technology Club, says she’d like to see unity among the sciences.

“I would like to see all the sciences come together,” said Zavala. “Be it bio-technology, robotics, or Anthropology, the idea is to share concepts and information.”
Ferdinand Jerusalem, president of Voices of Hope, a club for students with disabilities, was excited about the turnout for the Club Day Event.
“I am hoping to raise awareness of the difficulties students with disabilities face and provide ways to overcome the obstacles and prejudices we deal with,” said Jerusalem.
One of the busiest areas of the day was the Cosmetology department’s demonstrations of nail color and nail art.
Marcia Bonawitz, professor of cosmetology commented on the offerings of the cosmetology department.
“All this week and next, my students will be giving free nail polish and/or nail art to anyone who donates one can good, said Bonawitz.
