City College students weigh in on presidential hopefuls

As the 2012 presidential election approaches, four Republican candidates are duking it out for the chance to take on President Barack Obama in the race to become the nation’s leader for the next four years.

The Express asked City College students about their thoughts on the Republican candidates including: former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, medical doctor, author and also a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The consensus among the seven students at City College seemed to be split down the middle, with some wanting Obama for reelection and others wanting his term to end.

“[Mitt] Romney is a little more moderate than Newt Gingrich is,” said Ronan Crotty, major undecided. “I am not really a fan of either of them. I don’t really agree with any of their foreign policies, and I am not a fan of small government.”

Disappointed by the Republican candidates, Crotty said Obama should continue another term.

“Mitt Romney has a better chance at winning against Obama, but I think that Obama will be reelected,” Crotty said.

The Jan. 19 debate had multiple news outlets replaying similar clips about the night’s topics.

On the topic of tax returns, Romney hesitated during the debate when asked about releasing his tax information and said the information is to be released sometime around April, according to a Jan. 20 CNN article.

Gingrich posted his tax returns online before the debate and grilled Romney for not releasing his.

Romney said during the debate Thursday that the tax returns would not be released yet because of anticipated attacks from Democrats about his personal wealth, which according to the Jan. 20 CNN article, is around $190-$250 million.

Judith Valleley, early childhood education major, agrees with other City College students about the ongoing personal attacks amongst the candidates.

“There is too much bickering amongst the Republican candidates,” said Valleley.

Valleley pointed out that the primaries were influencing how other states vote in a negative way.

“I think the west side of the United States is going to have a lot different outcome, election wise, than the east,” she said. “Some of the states vote in the primaries too early, and it influences other states. I think they should be on the same day.”

Aside from the personal attacks involved in the GOP race and new policy ideas, some City College students still articulate faith in the current president.

Aiden Tran, business administration major said he was not interested in any of the candidates running for the 2012 Presidential Election, instead he said, he will vote for Obama come Nov. 6.

“[Obama] doesn’t get enough credit for what he does,” Tran said. “He is a good figure-head for the U.S.”

Marquis Lawson, business marketing major expressed support for Obama’s re-election as well.

“I think that Obama is really trying to help out, he is not forgetting [about] the little people,” Lawson said. “I think Obama is going to go another four years. Definitely.”
