Hits lead to Game 1 defeat, Game 2 victory

Just one day after losing two games in a doubleheader against Big 8 conference rival Diablo Valley College, City College split a doubleheader April 4 with the West Valley College Vikings. The Panthers lost Game 1, 13 -3 and won Game 2, 10-2.

In Game 1 of the doubleheader, the Vikings offense dismantled the Panthers with 13 runs on 15 hits and two errors, compared to three runs on five hits and one error for City College.

“They hit the ball, and we didn’t,” said head coach Tim Kiernan. “[Kaitlyn Guevara] threw a lot of off-speed stuff, and she was very slow, and we had a hard time with her.”

Starting pitcher Jostyn Bebout held the Vikings to three runs in the first four innings, but the Panthers’ offense only answered back with one run. In the top of the fifth inning, things went awry for City College, and it allowed six runs on six hits, including a three-RBI single from the Vikings’ Regan Van Diemen.

Bebout was pulled in the fifth for Holly McKenzie, but came back into the game in the top of the sixth inning and pitched a shutout inning.

“I think [Jostyn] did fine the first time, but she got into some trouble,” said Kiernan. “When she came back in, she seemed to settle down a little more.”

The Panthers did their best to not get run-ruled and scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and cut the lead 9-3. The scores came from a two RBI single from first baseman Erikka Burke.

The Vikings scored four more runs in the top of the seventh inning and took a 13-3 lead. The Panthers didn’t respond in the bottom of the seventh and ended the game on a strike out.

Game 2 was the opposite of Game 1, wherein the Panthers’ hits came frequently, and the Vikings’ hits were limited. The Panthers scored 10 runs on 12 hits and won on a walk-off single that forced a run-rule in the sixth inning.

The pitching by starter Morgan Welch was a big factor in the Game 2 victory. She was on the verge of pitching a shutout until the Vikings scored two runs in the sixth inning.

Welch had a chance to play in Game 1 in relief of Bebout, but Kiernan went with Mckenzie instead.

“I didn’t want them to see Welch [in Game 1] because I was throwing her in in the second game,” said Kiernan. “Evidently that worked.”

Panthers’ catcher Kaitlyn Leffle led the team in hitting in the win with three RBI singles, including the walk-off hit in the bottom of the sixth. Megan Anthony had two RBIs, and four others also had an RBI.

When asked about the difference between the two games, Kiernan jokingly stated: “I think this team does better when they eat. I don’t know if they ate breakfast in the morning, but we try to get them to. That could be part of it.”

The Panthers will face Modesto April 7 in the first of four consecutive away games before coming back home to play Santa Rosa in a doubleheader April 18.
