City College softball sweeps double-header

Panthers win on run-rule in both games against Reedley

Panthers’ softball swept the Reedley College Tigers in a double header Feb. 19 in its home opener at City College.

In the first game of the double header, the Panthers won handedly 10-1 on a run-rule in the fifth inning. Freshman pitcher Morgan Welch got the start, threw seven strikeouts and pitched four shutout innings — the Tigers scored one run in the fifth inning.

“I think when [Reedley] finally got a hit in the last inning, it was probably a little exhaustive for [Welch],” said Panthers’ head coach Tim Kiernan. “But she did a good job. There were a few too many walks, and we’ll have to cut that down. Other than that it was good.”

The first two runs came in the second inning on one of the more exciting plays of the game. Panthers’ first baseman Vronica Idrogo hit a two-run single that brought home pinch runner Hannah Trabucco and second baseman Kailey Olcott. On Olcott’s score, she collided with Tigers’ catcher Stephanie Cantu at the plate and would have been called out. However, Cantu dropped the ball during the collision, which allowed Olcott to score.

The Panthers went on to score two more runs in the second inning and six more runs in the third and fourth innings. Shortstop Abi Lund led the Panthers in hits and went 2-2 at the plate along with two RBIs.

Noelani Kakalia (2), Idrogo (2), Aaliyah Oliver (1), Emily Murphy (1) and Taylor McDowell (1) also had RBIs in Game 1.

“We did a good job,” said Kiernan. “We didn’t miss any signs, we executed pretty well and we pitched a pretty good ball game.”

The second game ended with the same outcome: a 10-1 victory on a run-rule in the fifth inning. This game, however, ended with a walk off grand slam by Kakalia in the fifth.

The Panthers went into the bottom of the fifth inning with a 4-1 lead, but closed the gap soon after. After scoring two runs in a bases loaded situation — one from a batter getting hit by a pitch and another being walked — Kakalia stepped into the batters box and hit a grand slam into deep left field.

Jostyn Bebout got the start in Game 2 of the double header and played well in the circle. She threw five strikeouts and would have pitched a no-hitter if not for a hit in the fourth inning.

“I didn’t even think that that was a hit that they got,” said Kiernan, “I thought it was an error, but I guess the scorekeeper ruled it a hit.”

McDowell had a big game; she had three RBIs, including a two-run homerun in the fourth inning.

“We didn’t hit the ball real solid early,” said Kiernan, “but when we started getting the ball in play and running the bases pretty well, we did a pretty good job.”

The Panthers will return to City College March 10 in a Big 8 Conference match up against Diablo Valley.
