Panthers defeat then lose to defending champs

City College split a doubleheader March 21 with Big 8 Conference rival Sierra College Wolverines. The Panthers won Game 1, 5-4 and lost Game 2, 6-3.

In Game 1, Sierra had a chance to tie it up 5-5 and force extra innings, but came up short. The Panthers got the stop and left two runners stranded on base, ending the game and the Wolverines’ 10-game win streak.

“We put the ball in play,” said head coach Tim Kiernan. “We make mistakes, we work on it.”

The bottom of the first started well for City College when it scored one run on two errors by Sierra College.

The crowd got loud in the third inning when center fielder Aaliyah Oliver hit a line drive to right field for a base hit. First baseman Erikka Burke homered over the fence at right field — her fifth of the season — bringing in Oliver and scoring two runs for the Panthers.

Panthers’ hitting coach Rich Moore took little credit for the women’s success when it comes to hitting.

“The girls are working hard,” said Moore. “I come out here at 9:30 a.m. and they’ll hit straight until practice. They’re the ones putting the working in.”

Sierra College answered back in the fourth inning. Lexi Wagoner got a base hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice fly by Kaitlyn Garcia and later stole third. First baseman Taylor Martinez brought Wagoner home on a base hit, which put Sierra on the board.

City College responded with back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Third baseman Taylor McDowell hit a line drive to right field and got a base hit. After a string of base hits, McDowell reached third base. She later stole home on an error by Sierra.

Outfielder Riley Ammaturo hit a fly ball out to right field advancing to third on an error by Sierra’s second baseman, bringing in Kaitlyn Leffle for the second run of the inning. The bottom of the fourth ended with City College in the lead at 5-1.

Sierra College rallied back in the top of the seventh scoring three runs on a number of errors by City College. However, the Panthers made the final out before Sierra could score the game-tying run.

The second game got off to an exciting start in the second inning when both teams scored two-run home runs. Panthers’ A.J. Ross hit a line drive to left field and reached first base on error. Second baseman Kailey Olcott hit the ball over the fence in left field for a two-run home run.

City College slipped in the top of the third when Sierra hit a line drive to center field and brought in a base runner on an error by Oliver. Sierra took a 3-2 lead.

The Panthers answered back in the bottom of the sixth after left fielder Abi Lund got a base hit and Oliver hit a perfect bunt. Sierra made an error at second in attempt to tag out Lund and allowed Oliver to advance all the way to third and Lund to score a game-tying run.

The seventh inning didn’t end well for the Panthers. Sierra had three back-to-back base hits. City College allowed the Wolverines to score a run after making an error at first, followed by a line drive to center field that brought in two more runs. Sierra took a commanding 6-3 lead over City College.

The Panthers failed to rally in the bottom of the seventh, and lost the game 6-3.

“We didn’t hit as well in the second game,” said Kiernan. “We’re a young team. We have 15 freshmen this year. It was a split between the two games but we play day-to-day.”

The Panthers next home game will be March 31 against American River College.
