Panthers complete comeback, get walk-off victory
City College defeated crosstown rival Cosumnes River College March 17 in extra innings in a close 9-8 game, and snapped the Hawks’ five game Big 8 Conference win streak in the process.
The team battled back from a 7-4 deficit and tied the game in the sixth inning, then tied the game again at 8-8 in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. “Battle” was the key word after the game for Panthers’ head coach Tim Kiernan.
“We’re battlers, and you can see that,” said Kiernan. “They’re young, we make some mistakes, but we battle. I’m really proud of them.”
The Hawks came into the game undefeated in conference play and were tied with defending state champions Sierra College for first place in the Big 8. They came out swinging in the first inning and took an early 3-0 lead off of a three-run triple from left fielder Christine Satterlee.
Cosumnes scored again in the top of the second inning and took a 4-0 lead. The Panthers answered back quickly in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homerun from second baseman Kailey Olcott.
Panthers’ starting pitcher Morgan Welch struggled early on, and was pulled for Jostyn Bebout in the third inning after allowing her sixth run on a wild pitch. Bebout allowed only two runs in the 4 1/3 innings she pitched, but she was pulled for Welch in the eighth.
“They’re both good,” said Kiernan. “They’re a little different, but they complement each other, and it works.”

Aside from the homeruns, the Panthers had five hits on the day. According to assistant coach Rich Moore, who works with the team’s hitting, they are disciplined at the plate, but still have things to work on.
“The biggest thing I saw today, is that they weren’t aggressive,” said Moore. “They were watching too many first-pitch strikes. We were disciplined today, but sometimes on the first pitch, I want them going for it.”
The Panthers are now 3-3 in Big 8 Conference play and have a 13-6 overall record. They will finish up their five-game home stand March 21 in a doubleheader against Sierra College.
