City College professor gives back to troops

Female Assistant Professor Myra Little
Assistant Professor Myra Little donates items to troops deployed to Afghanistan like soap, Power Bars, toothpaste, magazines, and books.

It can be hard for people to look past the green grass on their own side of the fence to see a neighborhood infested with weeds.

The timeless argument of “walk–a-mile” in someone else’s shoes is hard to comprehend when the person is thousands of miles away and they’re wearing combat boots.

Professor of Computer Information Science Sheley Little admits to her once obliviousness to the trials and tribulations of the United State’s military troops.

That was until her son was deployed to Afghanistan last December. Little says that fear, concern, and realization all hit home when her baby boy was sent into combat.

It was then when her primal motherly instinct took over.

Little says she needed to feel proactive. She found a way to help the troops remember that somebody cared.

Little says she came across a program called Adopt a Soldier through the website www.soldiersangels.org and in a way became the maternal entity to a battalion leader and his infantry.

“It started out as a coping mechanism,” says Little. “Until you’re attached to something like that, you don’t feel the significance.”

She began purchasing necessities and sundries to send to the troops  at her own personal expense.

It was a costly endeavor though. Sending a minimum of one box a month with enough goodies for 10 troops could easily break the bank.  This was in addition to the $15 APO postage for a 12-inch by 12-inch package.

To help with the costs, Little began to hit up colleagues on campus and they all started pitching in.  She began receiving donations of items like soap, Power Bars, toothpaste, magazines, and books.

“It’s important to send things to them so they don’t feel neglected,” says Little.

Little’s current concern lies with keeping the troops toasty during the winter months. Items like hand warmers, black beanies and quality warm socks are her focus for donations throughout the season.

For those interested in donating, Little says one doesn’t necessarily have to break the bank to contribute.

Although hygiene equipment and clothes are of vital importance, Little encourages offerings of all value. Letters and artwork from kids are great sentimental gifts that only cost a little elbow grease.

“Just make an effort to try and contribute,” says Little. “Pick one small thing, whatever it is.”

If hard pressed to find good items to send, Little suggests finding a pair of quality socks from www.covertthreads.com.

Magazines and books are also great, but there are issues with anything showcasing nudity or religious books in bulk.

“Not everyone is made up to go to the military, but everyone can do something to help troops and their families,” says Little.

Donations can be dropped off at Little’s office in the Business Building, Room 233 or for any inquiries she can be reached at [email protected].
