City College Panthers beat Sierra College Wolverines 37-31 in overtime

City College’s defense helped seal the win with a tipped ball and interception by sophomore linebacker Cory Nelson to stop the Sierra Wolverines in overtime play.

During the game, the Panthers’ sideline roared with words of encouragement and adrenaline-spiking comments for their teammates on the field.

Freshmen wide receivers David Oates, Nick Whitaker, and Bobby Garza helped quarterback Taylor Laird combine for 519 passing yards. Oates had two touchdown catches, including the game-winner in overtime.  Whitaker had five catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Garza had 10 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers’ secondary struggled at times against Sierra’s passing-heavy offense. But a tenacious defensive line limited Sierra’s rushing attack to 75 yards with key stops during the game. Defensive tackle David Weider and end Anthony Berkavatz both had key sacks.

“It feels good seeing how we’re playing with 18 freshmen” said a smiling coach Walker after the game.
