City College Panthers baseball team kept the game close against the Cosumnes River College Hawks on March 10, but were unable to overcome the CRC offense, losing by a final score of 4-2.

The Panthers remained scoreless in the first and second innings as the Hawks moved ahead 1-0 at the end of the second. Panthers left fielder Zack Madrigal hit a line drive over the CRC first basemen and into right field, taking first base in the bottom of the third inning.

Next up to the plate was Panthers second baseman Nick Blaser. His base hit brought Madrigal around the bases to tie the score at 1-1.

By the top of the fourth inning the Hawks scored again. The Panthers had the bases loaded and walked the Hawks batter, bringing the score to 3-1. The bottom of the fourth saw Panthers first baseman Patrick Armstrong bunt his way to first base before taking second base on a throwing error. The Hawks second baseman threw the ball too high for his first baseman to make the play.

The bottom of the fifth inning saw Madrigal getting on base with an RBI single that brought in Panthers infielder Ryan Pudwell from third base, making the score 3-2. However, CRC was able to maintain the lead in bottom of the eighth inning when they scored to make the game 4-2 in favor of the Hawks.

The Panthers were unable to score again and the score remained 4-2 in favor of the Hawks through out the rest of the game. After the game, Pudwell expressed that his team did not do well at all and they needed to be more focused.

“In the game series, we should have swept the Hawks,” Pudwell said.

He also said that he was very confident there was room for improvement and that the Panthers could make that happen. Panthers center fielder Davon Poole expressed that he and his teammates did not compete at the highest level throughout the entire game.

Poole also believes the team lacked a quality approach or commitment offensively against CRC. Defensively, Poole was frustrated at times with the pre-pitch planning, meaning the team could have done better to plan the next defensive move before the pitches were thrown to the plate.

Panthers infielder Kyle Harlow expressed that the team didn’t play its best ball to counter act the walks that put Hawks players on base. The coach made no comment.

The Panthers next home game is at against Santa Rosa Junior College on March 22.
