City College contest offers $2,000 in prize money for outstanding essays submitted by Oct. 18

The City College English Department opened up the annual “Outstanding Essay” contest for submissions, offering cash prizes to the most talented and persuasive writers on campus.

The contest promises $1,000 for first place, $700 for second place, and $300 for third place.

As of Sept. 10, the faculty contest administrator Dr. Maureen Dana reported that she had not received any submissions, which means that the prize money is still up for grabs.

Current City College students are eligible to submit an essay between 800 and 1,500 words long responding to the following prompt:

“Begin by reading James Rawls’s essay ‘California-A Place A People A Dream.’

You can pick up this essay at the Language and Literature Division Office in RS228, the Writing Center in the [Learning Resources Center], or contact Maureen Dana to receive a pdf copy. (Note: The essay was written in 1986.)

In this essay, Rawls concludes by asserting that “the promises of California remain undiminished.”

Following the guidelines from the front of this sheet, write an essay in which you argue whether his description of the promise of California is still valid. Be sure to support your position with specific evidence.
