Panthers’ pitcher throws the entire game in victory

After losing two straight games, the Panthers bounced back and defeated Diablo Valley College 4-1 at Union Stadium March 31 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.

Ben Ritchey got the starting nod and pitched a complete game — his first of the season. He allowed one run on six hits.

“He gave us a great chance and threw a lot of quality strikes and got a lot of quick outs,” said head coach Derek Sullivan. “So it was a pretty easy decision. He was feeling fine towards the end. I don’t think we were pushing him to a point where he was uncomfortable.”

After four scoreless innings, the Panthers put pressure on the Vikings with the first run of the game. Alex Muzzi got an RBI single that brought Anthony Fellman home and gave City College a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings answered in the seventh inning, when Ritchey allowed the only run the Vikings would score and tied the game 1-1.

“[Ritchey] continued to give us a chance even after he gave up a run,” said Sullivan. “I would like to say that was the turning point. From inning one our guy had it on the mound.”

The Panthers’ outfield helped out with pop ups and fly balls, but ultimately it was Ritchey who kept the Vikings off the Panthers’ back, according to Sullivan.

“[The Vikings] are an aggressive team usually, so they swing early in the count,” said Sullivan. “If you’re able to make a quality pitch early, you can get quick outs, and that’s really what happened all game.”

In the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers added their second run of the game. Fellman scored another run, this time from a Boston Romero hit out to right field. Romero was tagged out second and the Panthers left the inning with one run scored and one runner left on base.

The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, including one from a Brandon Langan RBI double.

Ritchey faced only three batters to get the final three outs of the game, capping off what Sullivan deemed an outstanding pitching performance.

“He’s our guy,” said Sullivan. “He wasn’t feeling too well before the game and was physically kind of fatigued. He put us on his back anyways and kept giving us a chance to put one run up and get a lead. He was just fantastic.”

Game 2 of the series will be held at Diablo Valley College April 2, and the Panthers will host Game 3 April 4 at Union Stadium.
