The City College Panthers won the first of a two-game series 3-2 against the Cañada College Colts Feb. 13 at Union Stadium.

The game got off to an exciting start when Cañada’s center fielder Randy Ventura homered to right field in the top of the first inning.

City College quickly rallied in the bottom of the inning after center fielder Alex Muzzi’s first at-bat ended with a walk, an advance to second on a wild pitch, a quick steal to third and eventually a run, assisted by first baseman Brandon Langan’s sacrifice fly ball to center field.

In the first at-bat of the second inning, Cañada’s Dom Giuliani doubled on a line drive to left field. Giuliani advanced to third after right fielder Greg Bildhauer grounded out to third. First baseman Sean Walsh singled to center field, bringing in Giuliani for a run.

The Panthers failed to score any runs in the bottom of the second, ending the inning with a 2-1 score.

The bottom of the third inning started with second baseman Anthony Fellman singling up the middle. Fellman came in to score after a Tyler Houlihan double to left field. After Houlihan stole third, Langan was sent to first after being hit by the pitcher.

The next batter, shortstop Drake Atlee, was walked, advancing Langan to second. Designated hitter Riley Simmons grounded out to second, bringing in Houlihan for the go-ahead run.

Houlihan made two successful steals throughout the game and was tagged at home plate on a third attempt.

“I usually have the green light [to steal], but when I get the chance, I’ll take it,” said Houlihan. “It’s really a team effort.”

Both teams failed to score any additional runs the remainder of the game. Although the Panthers won with a final score of 3-2, Cañada managed 11 hits while the Panthers only had 4.

“La Cañada is a good team, but we never gave up,” said head coach Derek Sullivan. “We made pitches when we needed to and we did a good job at identifying when to steal.”

Although the Panthers played strong defense throughout the entirety of the game, the team needs to adjust offensively to what the pitcher is doing in order to make more runs, according to Sullivan.

The Panthers faced Cañada College Feb. 14 at Union Stadium for Game 2 of the series.

City College lost to the Cañada College Colts 12-4 in Game 2 of a two-game series Feb. 14 at Union Stadium.

The game got away from the Panthers early on with the first at-bat. Starting pitcher Steven Talbert and the defense allowed seven runs on four hits and four errors in the top half of the first.

“Steven Talbert just did not have his best day, and he paid for it,” said Panthers’ head coach Derek Sullivan. “But again, when you’re playing a good team, they’re going to make you pay for your mistakes and we did.”

After allowing the seventh run of the first inning, Talbert was pulled for pitcher Steve Daini. Despite the homerun he allowed in the top of the second — Randy Ventura’s second of the series — Daini pitched well in the 3 1/3 innings he was on the mound.

The Panthers tried to rally in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits and an error. The first run came when Daniel Golden was walked while the bases were loaded, sending Kyle Blakeman home.

The next three runs came on back-to-back at-bats. With the bases loaded, Boston Romero hit a RBI single to left field, sending Brian Ingram home. Tyler Houlihan came up to bat next and hit a RBI single to right field, sending Matt Poulin home. On the same play, Golden scored an unearned run on a fielding error. The inning ended on a 1-6-3 double play.

“We battled back a little bit, but it wasn’t nearly enough,” said Sullivan. “A good team is going to beat you when you do that.”

The Colts went on to score the final four runs in the game, while the Panthers struggled to get anyone home.

Houlihan led the Panthers on the day offensively and went 3-5 with an RBI. Golden and Romero also had RBIs in the game.

For the Colts, Jacob Martinez had two RBIs and went three for five at the plate. Six other people had RBIs on the game, including a monstrous homerun to right center field by Ventura.

The loss put the Panthers at 3-4 on the season. Talbert, now 0-2, was credited with the loss, while Colts pitcher Rory Mcdaid, now 3-0, was awarded the victory.

“It’s all about learning. It’s not that these games don’t count — they certainly do,” said Sullivan, “but we need to get better and better as the season goes on.”

The Panthers will play a three-game series against Butte College starting Feb. 19. Ben Ritchey has been given the nod to start Game 1 of the series, and Zach Smart will start Game 2. Games 1 and 3 will be held at Butte, while Game 2 will be held at Union Stadium.
