Members of the City College teams wrapped up their season by sending six players to the Nor Cal Championships in early May. Two freshmen and four sophomores were chosen to participate.

The City College women’s team ended its regular 2011 season with one win and eight losses, according to the team’s website. The men’s regular season record ended with nine losses and zero wins.

Despite the losing streak, the players say they tried to persevere and registered nurse major Kat Nguyen says she is excited for next season.

The City College baseball team defeated the American River College Beavers in a close game April 26, with the score of 6-5.

Pitcher Kyle DeVore started the game out strong, giving up two hits in the first inning and giving one run to the Beavers. In the bottom of the first inning, City College’s Sam Hedrick came to bat and sent two of his teammates home with two RBIs. The Beavers trailed behind the Panthers.

The Panthers baseball team lost its final home game April 29 to the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs, 12-4, under a scorching sun in Union Stadium.

The game began in a deadlock that stretched the first two innings until the Cubs drew first blood with four runs at the bottom of the third inning.

The Panthers retaliated with two runs during the fourth inning and another during the fifth. But by the time they were up to bat in the sixth, the Panther morale suffered under a score of 9-3 after the Cubs scored four additional runs.

It was a sunny day with a spring breeze as City College’s softball team took on the Diablo Valley College Vikings April 26, winning its final home game 6-0.

Excitement and determination filled the air as the sun slowly baked the bleachers and the field. Both teams remained scoreless during the bottom of the third inning, leaving the audience grasping the side of their seats.

At the top of the third inning, City College pitcher Cortney Allen struck out three Viking batters within 15 minutes, and the Panthers were back on track.

City College’s Hughes Stadium, a venerable Sacramento sports landmark, has endured a long and storied history culminating with the current renovations taking place this spring and continuing through 2012.

The stadium has seen a lot since it first opened on Oct. 13, 1928. The 83-year-old monument, with a seating capacity of up to 23,000, has hosted all types of sporting events. Built primarily as a football stadium, it has largely remained so to this day. Still, athletes run across its track every day. It was a special night for the City College Athletics Department, as the school inducted eight new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Dante Club hosted nearly 100 people on the night of April 22. The inductees included: former City College wrestlers Blu Taylor, 1987-88, and Leo Woodfork, 1986-87; current track and field coach of more than 40 years Robert Lanza; 1994-96 two-sport stars Denise Minnatee, who played volleyball and softball, and Kim Martinez, who played basketball and softball; track and football player Marshall Land, 1983-85, who also served as student body president; Dell Fishback, honored posthumously for [read more...]

City College Panthers are stretched out on the baseball field, and like a sergeant watching his troops prepare for battle while other coaches stand by for assistance, Head Coach Andy McKay stands confidently off to the side.

“I came here to play and really enjoyed my experiences. [I] kind of wanted to be part of it all,” says McKay, who played for baseball for City College in 1991. McKay says this influenced him to come back and coach.

A week before spring break, the City College baseball team was completely shut down by Diablo Valley College April 12 with the score of 7-0. The big problem for the Panthers was the lack of hitting. With only six hits throughout the game they were not able to produce much of an offense.

The unexpected wind chills of the afternoon provided a baseball game that went back and forth in a heated mystery doubleheader. The City College Panthers were unable to clip the wings of the Cosumnes River Hawks in a doubleheader April 7, with a score of 8-5. The second game ended too in a City College loss at 6-3.

For some, a coach may be someone who just teaches a sport, but for City College’s women’s track and field team, Head Coach Lisa Bauduin is much more.

“She’s different in a good way… she’s on us more than just track-wise, but with school,” says sprinter, hurdler and kinesiology major Samantha Esperanza.

Bauduin has been running and participating in track and field since junior high school. She graduated from North Dakota State with a degree in physical education, coaching and health.
