City College has 18 sports programs and, as with many bigger universities, athletic programs have been trimmed or cut altogether.
“As of right now, I don’t know what is going to happen,” said City College Dean of Athletics Mitch Campbell.” I hope we can keep all of our programs, but I cannot say for certain.”
The University of California, Davis recently had to cut four sports teams, a move that had repercussions beyond the campus of UC Davis itself. City College had two All-Americans planning to go to UC Davis on wrestling scholarships, but they found out a week after [read more...]
While many college students were looking to recharge their batteries during spring break, one student continued to work up an insatiable appetite of keeping himself occupied and wrote the following on his Facebook wall: “We ran/hiked, lost a group of people in the middle of the desert, got a rental car stuck in the sand nearly 20 miles from anyone else, found the group nearly four hours later, then checked out the local scene;) . God how I love not missing track.”
Workaholic hardly. Burnout unheard of.

The spring semester is coming to an end, as is the City College’s spring sports season.
For some the season is over. But others are gearing up to make a run for the state title.
Softball
The softball team, which has earned 18 out of the last 20 Big 8 Conference titles, is ready for the postseason after getting the No. 2 seat. They have an overall record of 37-4 and a Big 8 conferance record of 18-3.
“Other than getting beat by Sierra [College] we’ve had the kind of year we want,” softball head coach Robert Maglione says. “We’re [read more...]
Mario Yanez is dedicated to tennis. He sweats profusely as he hops at rabbit speed to return the service his opponent launched at him with a lethal and devious look. He doesn’t care about the foe and returns the lime green tennis fuzz ball with the same intensity and dedication, with a simple whack of the blood red racket.
When it comes to playing on the court, Yanez gives his all and leaves with no regrets or resentments of his performance. He resembles the determination of Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Pete Sampras, but in the end has no interest [read more...]
City College has 18 athletic teams, ranging from men’s wrestling to women’s golf. Still, there’s one exception to the list.
There’s no male soccer team at City College.
Women’s soccer head coach Jang-Ha Oh laughs when recalling the times students have asked him why City College does not have a men’s soccer team.
“Over and over, the same again,” says Oh, a strong advocate for adding men’s soccer. “Why do we not have a men’s team?”
The laughter ends when he explains: “This is a gender issue, a Title IX issue.”
The federal law Title IX was enacted in 1972 [read more...]
Ninety-nine league championships, 14 state titles, 19 state runner-up finishes and three national banners. That is what City College athletics was able to accomplish during Richard “Dick” Pierucci’s 31-year tenure as City College athletic director.
Because of those accomplishments and Pierucci’s work for women’s rights in athletics, he was inducted into the California Community College Hall of Fame March 13.
Pierucci started his time at City College in 1960 as the baseball and football coach. He soon worked his way up and became the athletic director. As athletic director, Pierucci desired to keep a successful athletics program on track and [read more...]
Last season, freshman Cody Allen was the starting quarterback for the City College football team.
In a game at American River College, he helped lead the Panthers to a comeback win over the Beavers by throwing the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds left in the game.
This semester, Allen is still throwing, but instead of a football he’s throwing a javelin for the men’s track and field team. Before this semester, Allen had never competed in javelin throwing.
“The track coach asked me to throw javelin,” Allen says. “It turned out to be something I could do.”
Little did he [read more...]
The Panthers’ swim team participated in all non-relay and shoot-out events April 9 at the American River College Sprint Meet, despite being represented by only two student athletes.
Hannah Archibold placed first in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 33.78 seconds. Archibold also placed first in the 50-yard butterfly, third in the 50-yard free swim and fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke. These placements were for individual heats and not overall.
“I feel good about the butterfly, the other ones not so much,” Archibold said about her performance in the events. Archibold also said she did better than she expected [read more...]
Six seconds on the clock and the Panthers are down by one point. A free throw will make it or break it.
There’s a dramatic pause, a shot is made, the ball dances indecisively around the rim, and then it drops inside the hoop. The crowd goes wild.
Kiel Myers, 22, saved that game February 9 against Cosumnes River College.
Myers joined the City College basketball team last spring and he takes his position as center seriously.
“When I was a child, I didn’t even like basketball, and my dad would always make me sit down and watch it with [read more...]
