City College’s track and field takes on 12 teams

The morning breeze, the bustling of athletes scattered in every direction and buckets of Gatorade.  This was the scene at the Woody Wilson track in Davis on March 12. UC Davis presented the track and field Aggie Opening, inviting 12 schools from Northern California including a state college from Nevada to compete with one another.

City College’s track and field team echoed with team spirit as it went up against the 12 schools. The Panthers performed in almost every category, from javelin throwing to flying over hurdles to dashing in the relays to pole vaulting to meter dashes. “We’re doing [read more...]



City College wins last non-conference game against ARC

City College’s baseball team played The American River College Beavers for its last non-conference game of the season March 10. The Beavers came into Union Stadium with a record of 6-6 and left with their tails between their legs after a 10-4 Panther victory.

The Union Stadium scoreboard was already glowing by the first inning. The Panthers put up four runs and batted through the line-up with the help of the Beavers defense who committed three errors.

When Alex Ortega, Paulino Barreto and Adrian Garcia began collaborating in the spring semester, they had a vision to bring individuals together and build a stronger community for students at City College. With meetings four times a week, 20 or more individuals are brought together as one to form a close knit family in Boxing Club.

Alex Ortega, president of Boxing Club, wanted to bring his vision on campus to give people a way to learn the art of boxing without the high prices of a boxing gym. TJ Panen, has taken advantage of this opportunity.

On the first sunny day after a week of rain, City College’s men and women’s track teams met at Hughes stadium for practice Tuesday afternoon. Some students conditioned by running up and down the bleachers– others practiced the high jump, or hurled the shot put. The coaches demanded practice runs for the 200-meter dash while Ernest Graham, captain of men’s track and field, rested on the pole-vaulting cushion before his next attempt at the long jump.

The bright sunlight, a breeze of wind in the air and sounds of neon green balls being pummeled across the courts are all part of a heated tennis match.

City College men’s and women’s tennis teams faced the Fresno City College Rams in a conference home game on March 1. The Panthers lost 9-0 on both the men’s and women’s team.

On one end of the court, the men played doubles, facing off with one another. On another court, the women competed in a mixed doubles heated battle.

Panthers softball splits doubleheader with Golden Eagles

The Panthers softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against the Golden Eagles at Shasta City College Feb. 27, bringing the Panthers’ record to 5-1.

The Panthers won their first doubleheader game against the Golden Eagles scoring four unanswered runs. However, roles were reversed during the next match as the Golden Eagles outscored the Panthers and soundly beat them by a score of 6-1, dishing the team its first loss of the season.

For their next match, the Panthers will compete in the Bash at Buchanan, an all-day event, March 5-6 at Fresno City College.

It was a morning full of rain that almost threatened the City College tennis team’s match against Cosumnes River Feb. 25, but the clouds gave way and the sun revealed itself just in time for the first home tennis match. The men’s team lost by 9-0 and the women’s lost team by 7-2.

Playing a match at home came as a relief to first-year competitor Lynda Thomas.

“We had to travel,” Thomas said referring to their first two games against Shasta College and College of the Sequoias. “We were in vans for over six hours!”

City College baseball has a long tradition of success. The team has made 16 appearances in the State Championship game and won five times. Since 1979 it has had 299 players drafted into the major leagues. So when you go to a Panthers baseball game at City College, you know you’re going to get a good show.

Even if you aren’t interested in baseball, going to a Panthers game is always a joy to watch because of the players’ skill. Every student at City College should go to watch a baseball game at Union Stadium at least once. The atmosphere [read more...]



Panthers slip as Vikings charge in

City College men’s basketball team falls to Diablo Valley

After the very emotional, action packed final home basketball game, the City College Panthers fell short against Diablo Valley Vikings Feb. 15, with a score of 69-57.

Diablo Valley Vikings stepped foot onto the court, they were determined to win. The Panthers trailed by only eight points in the first quarter, however, they were no match for the tough defense and outstanding blocks made by the Vikings.

The Panthers never gave up and fought back offensively, scoring 41 points while the Vikings lead by four points.

Both teams made numerous foul while taunting opposing sides.

The City College men’s basketball team will head into the playoffs with a 15-10 overall record and 7-7 in the Big 8 Conference, which is a big change compared to last season’s final record of 8-17.

“We didn’t have as many sophomores last season,” said head coach Andrew Jones. “The group has grown together as a team from the beginning.”

When it comes to talk of a championship, City College is third in the league, but according to Jones, it’s too soon to say if they’ll take home the prize. Championships are not yet scheduled.
