City College’s Work Experience and Internship Program enables students to gain work experience in their fields of study and establish a network of coworkers to mentor them before transitioning from the academic world to the labor force.

“There is still a hidden job market,” said Wendy Slobodnik coordinator of the Work Experience and Internship Program. “Now, more than ever, it’s really who you know.”

Second-year City College students with declared majors and in good academic standing with a 2.5 GPA or higher have the option of being placed into one of 400 to 500 internships in the Los Rios district [read more...]

City College’s Queer Straight Alliance club applauded the federal appeals court decision Feb. 7 that the California same-sex marriage ban under Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals made the 2-1 ruling, stating that Proposition 8 “serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.”

“It was a long time coming,” said City College anthropology professor and Queer Straight Alliance co-adviser Natascha Storms-Suvang. “I’m [read more...]

With the cost of tuition rising each year for colleges and universities, students and parents are finding it increasingly difficult to pay for college. But if a new plan revealed on Jan. 27 by President Obama at the University of Michigan goes into effect, paying for a college education may become a little easier.

Under the plan, not only would more schools offer Perkins loans—an increase from 1,700 schools to 4,000—schools that raise tuition costs too often could be stripped of financial aid money. The money would instead go to schools that are doing a better job at controlling costs [read more...]

As of the summer semester of 2012, a new system for Los Rios students will take effect, allowing fewer chances to repeat courses because of budget cuts to the California Community Colleges.

Already implemented this semester at City College, students in the entire Los Rios Community College district will now have only three chances to repeat a failed or withdrawn course.

Previous rules allowed a student to withdraw the same course four times in addition to repeating that course up to three times because of substandard grades or after receiving a no credit/no pass.

Under the new system, students will [read more...]

A new Student Ambassadors program was recently introduced at City College with the goal of helping new students on their journey through their first few weeks at City College.

The program consists of a student team of campus veterans, whose aim is to help guide and assist new students in getting acquainted with the campus and its policies. The team helps students find their classes and get help from counselors and administrators. Members also speak in both high school and college classes about the college experience.

The ambassadors are not hard to identify. They walk around with fire-engine-red buttons that [read more...]

The Los Rios Community College District could lose $12.3 million if California voters reject Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed tax initiative set for the Novemberballot, according to Susie Williams, associate vice chancellor of Communications and Research for the LRCCD.

The Los Rios cutback is part of a potential $2.4 billion decrease in California K-12 schools and community college budgets that will be put into effect should Brown’s planned tax increases fall through when they reach the ballot, according to a recent L.A. Times article.

The $2.4 billion would then be utilized for other unspecified services.
