Software deals try to curb illegal downloads

Stephanie Rodriguez | Staff Writer

Steep software discounts of 80 to 90 percent are currently available to students through Adobe and Microsoft, a move that may help curb free illegal downloads that can end up costing much more in jail time and fines.

“Why would you risk legal action or a fine when you can get the stuff for $30?” said Dr. Elaine Ader, dean of City College’s Information Technology Department. “I don’t think people think about it.”

For just $59.95 students can purchase a legal copy of Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007, a software [read more...]

Charlene Jones | Staff writer Jonesc27@imail.losrios.edu

On Oct. 1, the Los Rios Community College District rolled out controversial Internet hotspot access requirements—student ID numbers and passwords—for personal computers. Robbery and illegal weapons possession are up. But on the other hand, motor vehicle theft is way down.

The annual Clery Report for the Los Rios Community College District, which discloses crime statistics from the last three years, was released Oct. 1 by the Los Rios Community College Police Department.

This year’s report covers 2006-08. It includes separate data for all LRCCD colleges, including on-campus, non-campus and public property sections.

The most dramatic difference is in motor vehicle theft, which at City College was 17 times higher in 2006 than 2008, when only one vehicle was reported stolen.

The number of Californians without healthcare insurance has grown to a staggering 7 million, according to an article in The Sacramento Bee in September.

Amid the escalating unemployment rate, rising care costs and increases in premiums, uninsured City College students needing to stay healthy can find low-cost services both on campus and off.

The City College Health Center distributed seasonal flu shots Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 in Café One and the cafeteria with a $25 fee, according to City College nurse Wendy Gomez.

The City College Health Center provides other services to keep uninsured students healthy. Gomez said the [read more...]

Healthcare reform and what it means

October 12th, 2009
By |

Healthcare reform championed by President Barack Obama could provide students nationwide with affordable health insurance.

Just a month after his inauguration, Obama told Congress that America’s healthcare system is driving families and small businesses into bankruptcy.

Legislation proposed by Obama, Max Baucus and other members of Congress would make it illegal for insurance companies to drop coverage due to a pre-existing condition or when a person is sick. Proposed legislation would eliminate yearly and lifetime caps on coverage and put a cap on patient out-of-pocket expenses.

Also, individuals would be welcome to keep their current coverage, if they have any. [read more...]

Students surround a table, pounding and yelling, eager to see how the dice will fall.

It’s not uncommon to see students playing cards or throwing dice during lunch hours at City College. Is it gambling or is it just harmless fun? Los Rios Community College Police said they find gambling isn’t an issue due to an increase in manpower. Faculty also know that gambling on campus is illegal, and are usually the first to step in and tell students to stop playing.

“Gambling used to be a problem at City College a few years ago, but because of [read more...]

Embattled Associated Student Government president Steve Macias launched a scathing attack on City College’s Health Services department Tuesday in a letter to the Express.

Macias played an integral part in bringing an anti-abortion group to campus on Constitution Day. The group, which refers to itself as the Sanctity of Human Life Network (or SOHLNet), was billed as the Genocide Awareness Project in ASG documents Macias submitted for approval as a part of the Constitution Day festivities.

Macias is now facing a recall election, to be held Oct. 20 and Oct. 21, orchestrated by students offended by the display and what [read more...]
