Faculty, staff to nominate six students

City College’s Voices of Hope club is offering six $150 scholarships to students on campus living with the challenges of a disability.

City College faculty, staff, and administration are being asked to nominate students who qualify for the motivational award. To qualify, students must be documented with the Disabled Students Programs and Services, have at least a 2.5 GPA, and be enrolled in at least 3 units.

Nomination must be submitted in writing to David Hagerty in the Learning Disability Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 6, and should answer the following questions:

50 schools to win award for first time

City College was recently awarded the Gift of Hope Award for its accomplishments during the 2011 Blood Source blood drives.

According to Brie Leon, Blood Source account manager, City College won the award over 50 other junior colleges, technical schools and universities in the surrounding area including all Sacramento schools that participated in the drives.

Learning Resource Center offers tutoring to students struggling to succeed

When students come into the Learning Resource Center and see the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center, they may not realize all it has to offer them and that they offer tutoring for math.

Students can go to two different locations on campus when they need tutoring. The Learning Skills and Tutoring Center is located on the first floor of the library, and the Math Lab is in Rodda South, Room 162.

Task force proposals would set cap on units, cut funding

Senate bill proposals by the Student Success Task Force (SSTF) that are currently in the Legislature could force students across California to create educational plans to complete their degrees early in their college careers and link funding for colleges to student success in school.

Faculty members across the Los Rios district have mixed emotions about how the SSTF’s 22 recommendations will affect students, which were unanimously approved by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s office.

Spend the fall semester in Spain

Study Abroad in Barcelona application deadline is April 1

Community college students have an opportunity to study overseas in Barcelona, Spain, this fall semester. The deadline for applications is April 1.

Diane Richy-Ward, professor of art at American River College, said that the program, sponsored by the Northern California Study Abroad Consortium along with the California Community Colleges, is open to all Los Rios students and offers 12 units of UC/CSU transferable courses.

The cost of the trip is $7,365 and that excludes student enrollment fees and airfare.

Clubs and Events Board and Student Associated Council elections coming soon

The Student Associated Council will hold elections for all positions within the Clubs and Events Board and the Student Senate Tuesday and Wednesday, April 17-18, in the Learning Resource Center Lobby.

The outcome of the elections will determine who will run student events and voice student concerns starting July 1.

As SAC Election Chair Amina Hersi said, “If you care about your education, you should be out there [voting]. If you care about what goes on… [if] you have ideas, you should come out and vote.”

Authors of “Somewhere Inside,” journalists Laura Ling and older sister Lisa Ling, will be speaking at the Strive for Strength retreat on April 2.

The Lings will be talking about their experiences and successes as American journalists, who grew up in Sacramento, with an emphasis on “informing, educating and empowering female participants.”

Lisa Ling is best known as a co-host on ABC’s “The View”, hosting “National Geographic Explorer,” reporting on “Channel One News” and being a special correspondent on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and CNN.

Remi Kanazi to share stories of Palestine at CAC

Poet, writer and activist Remi Kanazi will be speaking March 26 at the City College Cultural Awareness Center.

According to the Cultural Awareness Center staff, Kanazi’s content is geared toward the problems and injustices of Palestine. “Poetic Injustice” is Kanazi’s most recent release and he was the editor of “Poets of Palestine”.

Kanazi is a Palestinian freelance writer based in New York City who travels the world to share his political commentary through America and parts of the world such as the United Kingdom and the Middle East.
