Students Celebrate Chicano Heritage

City College and the Cultural Awareness Center coordinated events honoring, celebrating and showcasing Chicano and Latino heritage Sept. 13 and Sept. 15 on campus.

Sept. 13 the Cultural Awareness Center presented HERstories: A Visual Art Journey, featuring artists and presenters Ruby Chacon and Veronica Perez from Salt Lake City, Utah. More than 40 people showed up to listen to the two Chicana artists. A slideshow was presented of their paintings and murals, combined with monologues to accentuate what it was like to grow up in North America as a Latina.

Pulitzer-prize winning author speaks to City College

Journey through South America

National best-selling author Sonia Nazario reflected Sept. 15 on her life as a journalist, as well as the lives of thousands of immigrants on their journey through South America, when she visited City College.

The LA Times reporter was dedicated to tell stories of the poor and undocumented immigrants from South America when she spoke to nearly 200 students and faculty who gathered in the Student Center. Nazario spent more than 20 years writing as a reporter and has spoken to a variety of high schools and colleges across the country, including City College in 2010.

City College’s day of clubs

It’s that time of year again, City College will host its fall semester Club Day Sept. 22, and will be presented by the Student Leadership and Development.

“On average [there are] about 20-35 clubs that participate for Club Day,” City College Student Affairs Specialist Chris Torres said. “The day is reserved for clubs to highlight and get the students exposed to the clubs on campus.”

Club Day is to introduce students to the existing clubs and upcoming clubs that are on campus.

Veteran’s best friend to visit campus 9/28

The Voices of Hope Club and the Staff Resource Center are hosting a book signing, with guest speaker Luis Carlos Montalvan, author of the New York Times best-seller “Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him,” Sept. 28.

Retired Army Captain Montalvan, accompanied by his dog, Tuesday, the main character of his book, will be discussing the book along at the book signing. Montalvan returned from Iraq suffering from a brain injury, physical disabilities and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Former Jounralism Adviser Jean Stephens Dies After Illness

Former City College journalism professor Dr. Jean Stephens helped direct the path of numerous journalists who attribute their success directly to her guidance. Stephens died July 30 at age 85, from complications with diabetes.

Dr. Stephens, referred to as Doc or Doc Stephens by former students, died 25 years after she retired from her post at City College.

Managing editor for the Sacramento Bee and City College alumni Tom Negrete remembers Stephens’ passion for training journalists and her absolute determination to see her students succeed.

Athletic department loses more classes

The Athletics Department has suffered a cut in classes in the past two years, affecting both the students and faculty at City College.

In the last two years, one-third of the athletics budget has been cut, according to Mitch Campbell, dean of physical education, health and athletics. Approximately 80 athletics course sections have been cut, Campbell said, leaving students with fewer choices and fewer part-time staff members to instruct them.

City College basketball player Xavier Williford Jr. worries that the loss of classes might have a negative effect on some students.

Class combines math 100 and 120 for more credits

Experimental math class debuts

It’s no secret that required prerequisite classes—such as math, history, and English—are difficult to complete because of a high demand for enrollment, but a new class offered at City College may just be the formula to solve the problem.

City College mathematics and statistics professor Renee Medina instructs an experimental mathematics course called  Math 299. This eight-unit course was created by the math division dean Anne Licciardi and combines elementary and intermediate algebra. Lights, camera, action!

The City College Auditorium and Art Court Theatre have been closed and under renovation since June 2010, and the majority of the campus has at one point wondered when it will be finished.

The historic structure was built in 1936 and hasn’t been touched for roughly 40 years,” said Greg Hayman, City College director of Operations “It was recently updated with a brand-new air conditioning system, electrical wiring and IT infrastructure.”

Chicano Heritage Mural

City College students can learn about Chicano and Latino heritage through different speakers and artists, listen to mariachi music in the Quad and have a chance to speak with health agencies Sept. 13 and Sept. 15.

“It is important that we come together and celebrate each others events, each others heritage [and] each others fiestas,” said David Rasul, dean of counseling and transitions.

As part of Her Stories, Ruby Chacon and Veronica Perez from Salt Lake City, Utah, will guide participants Tuesday 10 – 11:30 a.m. through a visual art journey in the Cultural Awareness Center.

Day of Remembrance Monday at City College

Sept. 11 will mark the 10-year anniversary since the attacks on the Twin Towers and, other U.S. landmarks. Though many years have passed, the tragedy has left lasting grief.

City College is having a day of remembrance in the Quad on Sept. 12 at 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Faulty and students are encouraged to attend and voice their thoughts and memories on this day to reflect on those who lost their lives, lost their loved ones and the heroes who put their lives on the line.
