City College faculty come together to discuss upcoming election

About 25 City College faculty discussed the importance of the upcoming election on Sept. 23.

Dean Murakami, president of the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers, discussed at the staff meeting how important it is for the faculty and students to get involved.

“It is critical that students have a vote in deciding what the education turnout will be, two different candidates with two different views on the role of higher education,” Murakami said.

Kondos Gallery reopens, acclaimed artists exhibit artwork

While many believe Sacramento is just a cow town, some of the most famous artists in the world call it home.

Celebrating the opening of the renovated Gregory Kondos Gallery, City College welcomed three of its most famous alumni with an exhibition featuring the work of artists Fred Dalkey, Gregory Kondos, and Wayne Thiebaud.

“I heard about this gallery through a friend and being a fan of art, I just had to see what these artists had to offer,” said Andreya Hall, a City College student. “Especially since they went to this school.”

The disbursement of this academic year’s Cal Grants, state funds that are awarded to undergraduates who meet the GPA and income requirements, is being held up by a continued delay in the California state budget.

According to City College Public Information Officer Amanda Davis, 232 applicants were chosen from this campus to receive grants, based on income and GPA criteria. However, historically, the state has not funded any grant programs until the state budget has passed.

City Theatre’s Sacramento Shakespeare Festival celebrated its 25-year anniversary with cake and ice cream July 18 at William Land Park.

This summer, the production showcased “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” directed by David Harris, and “Othello”, directed by Luther Hanson, using professional and student-actors and actresses from both the Sacramento area and City College.

Panther cheerleaders and members of City College’s hip-hop team kicked off the theme of Welcome Day Thursday, Sept. 9, by leading the afternoon crowd into the electric slide.

The Black Eyed Peas song “I’ve got a feeling” blared in the background as students, faculty and staff performed the line dance. They came together as a “flash mob” in which a crowd dances in unison at a given time and disperses quickly.

City College’s premier literary journal “Susurrus”, is now accepting story submissions for the upcoming spring 2011 edition.

Both current students and alumni are encouraged to submit their literary works of creative nonfiction, fiction, or poetry to “Susurrus”.  Each writer is allowed to turn in up to four poems, two pieces of creative nonfiction, and two pieces of literary fiction.

The deadline for all final literary pieces is Oct. 1, 2010. Writers have the choice of emailing their submissions to “Susurrus” advisers, Jan Haag and Katie McCleary. Submissions can also be dropped off at Haag’s office, located in the Journalism Department [read more...]

The Sacramento City College Foundation recently awarded four City College staff members scholarships helping them further their academic careers.

This year the SCC Foundation recognized Tanya Anderson, Ashmeeta Mishra, Joanie Mitchell and Hannia Velez with $500 scholarships for pursuing their education.

Recipients for this award must be working to complete an associate degree and also hold full-time positions on campus.

SCC chosen as a new air traffic control school

The Federal Aviation Administration, looking to fill an anticipated need for future flight controllers, has chosen City College as one of five new sites nationally for an air traffic control training program that will begin in the fall 2010 semester.

“We are thrilled to have been chosen for this highly selective training program,” said Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Brice Harris in a recent news release. “The credit goes to Sacramento City College’s historic and outstanding aeronautics program.”
