Former student donation will contribute to higher education

Like most colleges, at City College, in order to maintain funding, scholarships are mostly dependent upon private donations.

According to Director of Institutional Advancement Tracy Newman, City College alumna Hulda Mae Stone passed away in September 2011, bequeathing half of her estate—$1.375 million in total—to City College’s scholarship and student emergency loan program.

The donation is the largest in City College’s history. Stone attended City College for two years in the 1930s, and according to Newman, she deeply believed in the need for higher education.

Four students take home cash prizes

Civility essay contest winners announced

Winners of the Sierra Health Foundation’s Outstanding Essay Contest on the topic of civility include Alysia Iglesias, who was awarded $1,000 for first place; Allison Dycaico, who won $700 for second place; and in a tie for third place, Jason George and Rudy Behrens were awarded $300 each on May 11.

Students were asked to write 800 to 1,500 words on what civility means to them, as well as how they experience it in their everyday lives.

Ribbon cutting ceremony to reveal new auditorium

City College’s new and improved auditorium, the Performing Arts Center will debut on May 8 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in front of the auditorium. Renovation of the 75-year-old building began June 2010 and had an estimated budget of $12 million.

Among those scheduled to speak during the first part of the ceremony are City College President Kathryn Jeffery and Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Brice Harris.

Blood Source recently visited City College for blood donations

The City College’s Health Fair, presented April 25-26 by Health Services and facilitated by Blood Source, allowed students to have the opportunity to help save another human being’s life.

Alexis Bell, undecided major and City College student/athlete, offered to become a blood donor. She said she believes that everybody has a right to live. “I will provide anything that I can, just to know that I am helping out an individual in need,” said Bell.

The event was guided by Wendy Gomez, City College nurse.

Clothing drive May 5 at City College

Spend the morning of Cinco de Mayo giving back to the community with the Students of Occupational Therapy May 5 at its clothing drive in City College’s parking lot F at 21st Street and Sutterville Road from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SOTA is asking for gently-used clothing, purses, dolls, soft toys (no hard/outside toys), towels and anything in between. The group also asks that if you bring something, put it in a tied plastic garbage bag. Shoes should be placed in a separate bag.

Thousands of City College students may be locked out from transferring

In an effort to cut their budget, the California State universities have vowed to freeze admissions and transfers for the spring 2013 semester if a taxmeasure is not passed on the November 2012 ballot, according to a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle.

An estimated 20,000 to 25,000 qualified students will be barred from enrollment, the Chronicle stated, if voters reject the tax initiative proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown, which will temporarily increase California sales tax and impose a tax hike to individuals making over $250,000 to $500,000 a year.

City College’s literary journal release party May 5

The 2011-2012 edition of City College’s award-winning literary journal, Susurrus,will be unveiled on May 5 at a evening release party .

In addition to this year’s journal, the event features the poet Francesca Bell,as well as the art of photographer Daniel Villanueva and visual artist Sierra McGuire, among others.

The unveiling also reveals something relatively new for Susurrus: This year there is an overall theme for the journal. “From Light to Dark” is the theme editor in chief Brittany Bogan chose for the year.

May 16 ceremony will take place Downtown

Mark your calendars: City College’s 92nd commencement ceremony is right around the corner.

The 2012 graduation ceremony will take place May 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, located at 1515 J Street.

“Due to construction on Hughes Stadium, this year we will be holding the commencement ceremony at an exciting new location in the heart of downtown Sacramento,” said Amanda Davis, City College Public Information officer, in an email.

According to Kim Goff, Admissions and Records Supervisor, students can pick up their caps and gowns from the College Store beginning May 4.

City College to focus more on high school graduates if SB 1456 passes

City College students who don’t meet academic progress requirements may soon lose eligibility for the California Community College Board of Governors (BOG) fee waiver if California State Senate Bill 1456 becomes law.

Known as the “Student Success Act of 2012,” SB 1456 was approved unanimously by the Senate Education Committee April 18 and heads toward a probable Senate vote before the end of the spring semester.

60-day project to add more parking, handicap drop-off

Construction began April 30 on the newest addition to the J lot for staff parking on 12th Avenue, which will add 10 parking spaces along with a new drop-off area for the handicapped.

The north area of the Art Court Theater will be confined by fencing for the remainder of the construction project, which is scheduled to continue for 60 days, according to City College Director of Operations Greg Hayman.
