NYC media training program for people of color highlighted

Executive Director of Third World Newsreel Dorothy Thigpen will speak at City College’s Cultural Awareness Center on April 10 from noon to 1 p.m. about TWN’s affordable and accessible training program for people of color who are interested in becoming media artists.

The event is being presented by the CAC and the International Studies program and will include information on the New York City-based training program, as well as TWN’s rich history of producing films about anti-war movements, the women’s movement and civil and human rights movements.

Faculty, staff to nominate six students

City College’s Voices of Hope club is offering six $150 scholarships to students on campus living with the challenges of a disability.

City College faculty, staff, and administration are being asked to nominate students who qualify for the motivational award. To qualify, students must be documented with the Disabled Students Programs and Services, have at least a 2.5 GPA, and be enrolled in at least 3 units.

Nomination must be submitted in writing to David Hagerty in the Learning Disability Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 6, and should answer the following questions:

Proud women receive recognition and motivation

White cloths covered half the round table tops which filled up half of the City College Student Center. The surrounding chairs filled with returning and departing bodies. While it was sunny and bright outside, the City College community gave extra warmth March 23rd to the 29 recipients of Outstanding Women’s Awards.

Among the recipients was Katherine Whitehead, who started City College in the summer of 2010 and is now on her way to career as an aircraft dispatcher. As a member of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa, she received the second-place award as member of the year. Whitehead works in [read more...]



50 schools to win award for first time

City College was recently awarded the Gift of Hope Award for its accomplishments during the 2011 Blood Source blood drives.

According to Brie Leon, Blood Source account manager, City College won the award over 50 other junior colleges, technical schools and universities in the surrounding area including all Sacramento schools that participated in the drives.

City College student connects with her creativity

When City College nursing major Cheryl Coleman was 4, she got in touch with her creative side by taking her mom’s sewing kit and stitching things together.

Now about 26 years later, Coleman has taken that creative side one step further by creating her own jewelry line, “Cheryl’s Dope.”

Although juggling school, work and being a mom is difficult, the 30-year-old jewelry designer says it’s worth all the hard work because it provides her family with extra income.
