In Japan there are different titles attached to the end of people’s names, called honorifics. One who teaches is respected, and the honorific attached to a teacher’s name is “sensei.” The literal translation is “lives before others.”

When one thinks sensei, the description is usually a wise, philosophical soul who teaches honor and respect, but there is so much more. Sensei is someone to look up to, who inspires others, who not only teaches respect and honor, but shows it. One who mentors. One who counsels.

Like a true sensei, Keith Muraki, 50, is a counselor and program director for [read more...]

The man with the Vans behind the scenes

Lights, camera, Gore

Nestled in his homey, three-walled corner cubicle adorned with pictures of family, friends and posters of tropical islands, Theatre Arts professor Robert Gore sits in his swiveling chair drinking from a bottle of raspberry-flavored water.

Dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, the ankles of his bright red socks peek out from under his pants before disappearing into his black-and-white-checkered Vans tennis shoes, Gore asks, “Where do you want me to start?” when asked how he got where is today.

Since 1996, Gore has been teaching in the Theatre Arts Department at City College. Although he loves his job, Gore, who [read more...]

Fencing is not just your typical fighting sport. Bill Gillespie, City College Fencing Club adviser describes the sport as the “ultimate game of tag.” Deceiving, watching, and misleading plays its part in the strategy of fencing. It also involves a great amount of both physical and mental strength.

The Fencing Club began in 2008 and has had 12 tournaments so far. They average two to three tournaments each semester.

Husham Huron, computer technology major and recent winner of the bronze medal in the novice division, describes fencing as psychological warfare between the two people involved in the sport.

City College letter carrier Bob DeNigris does what he has done for 20 years: deliver City College mail. DeNigris spends his workday sorting through and delivering campus mail the old-fashioned way from building to building. Photo by Kimberly Washington | freelancerphotos@yahoo.com

Bob DeNigris is surrounded by postal boxes and unsorted mail. Listening to a copy machine rapidly make thousands of copies throughout most of the day might be displeasing to some people.

Not for DeNigris. He’s in the middle of it all. He’s dependable and dedicated throughout the dying age of hand-delivered mail. Every morning around 8 DeNigris can be found in the Business building with his cart filled with envelopes and packages. City College students don’t even flinch as his pushcart makes unbearable commotion against the rough, rocky campus sidewalks, paths and hallways. He’s invisible.

Sorting through numerous pieces of [read more...]

Much like an archeologist digging up significant artifacts, David Harper Martin dusts off particular subjects and events he finds essential to reveal. He uncovers the unnoticed civilization of City College and does what he does best: document short videos about people, places and events here at City College through the program he created—”Hidden City.”

“Hidden City” is a program about events and people that make the college special, produced and hosted by Martin, a City College educational media design specialist. He has shot about 16 short documentaries about the college since 2007, each between 10 and 20 minutes long.

Inspiration isn’t easy to find. It could take hours, days, even months to find the right path. One thing is certain: Inspiration does not just come in layers of insightful speeches or positive energy from friends; it can come in any form.

A 1985 green RV was stationed in the City College Quad Nov. 11 with tables and sound systems surrounding the area. A big banner read one very distinctive headline: “Roadtrip Nation — define your own road in life!”

Roadtrip Nation, a movement sponsored by insurance company State Farm, travels around the country hoping to inspire students to follow [read more...]

City College students applauded the grand opening Nov. 18 of the first Veterans Resource Center of the Los Rios Community College District.

Veterans and their families were joined by a host of City College faculty to celebrate the new VRC in the Student Center. Visitors enjoyed a barbeque lunch, and entertainment for the children, also attended by faculty members and veterans.

“It was a success,” said Admissions and Records Clerk Jake Kattan. “We wanted to make this a family event and see the families come out. It was great to see all the on-and off-campus services that are offered to [read more...]
