Are 3-D movies worth the watch?

Three dumbensions

Take a look back 100 years in the evolution of cinema. You’ll pass through the golden years of Hollywood, cartoon animation, color movies, 3-D movies of the 1950s, high-tech computer animation, and then… 3-D movies? Novelty or gimmick—call it what you want—but this latest Hollywood craze is sending box office revenues through the roof.

But, what’s the point?

Frankly, there isn’t much need for the third dimension. While watching a movie, our brain processes the images in front of us as having depth, even though we are well aware that the image itself is projected on a flat screen. [read more...]

As one of the oldest and most complex cultures in the world, China’s influence is undeniable.

Students at City College can experience the impact of this rich culture by participating in the Chinese Culture Club.

“The significance of the [club] is that you are able to rediscover the history just by getting involved and learning,” says Norman Wong, City College student and president of the Chinese Culture Club.

“Since Norman has been president, the club has been in good hands,” says Holly Piscopo, City College professor and the club’s adviser. “They are [also] involved in helping Pakistan survivors from the [read more...]

The bicycle: as invention, novelty, and transportation, exists as a daily fixture at City College. Despite the glut of cars and other transportion methods students may take advantage of, the bicycle continues to thrive. Not bad for a vehicle nearly 200 years antiquated.

It’s not to hard to spot cyclists on campus either, just like many art majors congregate toward open areas, and hackey sackers gravitate to the Quad, its easy to spot City College cyclists. Just sit by the bike rack by the fountain.

“I ride my bike everywhere because it’s my only form of transportation, other than walking [read more...]

Full-fledged bipedal style at City College

The fountain quad at City College resembles a street fair at times—students with guitars sit on the benches outside the cafeteria, poised like troubadours; others can be seen playing hacky sack in the quad. Nearby, the bike racks are filled to capacity.

Biking has long had a reputation for being a sensible means of transportation and hard economic times have made it more popular among students—stylish even, according to City College students.

“You see it in a lot of Urban Outfitters’ ads, people being really fashionable and biking,” says Jamie Santiago, City College journalism and international relations major.

Pink, the color that some people might reference to breast cancer awareness. Or pink, the pop star. Undoubtedly, pink is a color that sticks out like a sore thumb. However, for some people, it signifies individuality.

Gioia Fonda, a City College art professor, makes her stand about the color pink. Fonda invented a week in mid-November called Pink Week, dedicated to the color. Her stand started in 1993, while attending California College of Arts and Crafts.  Last week, Pink Week celebrated its 17th year.

“It was the early ‘90s,” Fonda says. “It felt like pink wasn’t an option for anyone. [read more...]

‘Due Date’ hits a bump

If movies have taught us anything, it’s that a man will go to great lengths to get to his family; whether that means fighting handicapable hillbillies, scoring drugs on Craigslist, or even dodging Border Patrol. Director Todd Phillips’ new film, “Due Date,” is no different.

“Due Date” stars Robert Downey Jr. as straight-laced architect, Peter Highman, who embarks on an outrageous cross-country journey to witness the birth of his first born son in Los Angeles with a foe turned friend, aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay, played by Zach Galifianakis. When an unpleasant encounter and misunderstanding gets both men kicked off [read more...]
