Brain candy binge over break

Brain candy binge over break

Movie marathoning and TV binge-watching—the act of devouring multiple seasons of a show in a very short time—has become a delightfully mindless pursuit of students and faculty alike.

Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, and Vudu—to name a few of the legal services out there—give viewers instant access to a dizzying amount of content.

Here is some recommended viewing for a week of well-earned laziness.

Superhero Movies
Though Marvel began making movies all the way back in the 1940s with the Captain America serials, this list focuses on the more recent superhero blockbusters. “Captain America: the Winter Soldier” opened in theaters April 4 and the next X-Men movie comes out in May. Consider the following as a warm-up before hitting the big screens.

• “X-Men” (2000) 104 minutes
• “Spider-Man” (2002) 121 minutes
• “Iron Man” (2008) 126 minutes
• “The Incredible Hulk” (2008) 114 minutes
• “Thor” (2011) 130 minutes
• “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) 125 minutes
• “Marvel’s The Avengers” (2012) 143 minutes

Total run time: 14 hours, 23 minutes

Artificial Intelligence Movies
“Transcendence,” a movie about a scientist who downloads his psyche into a computer, premieres in theaters April 18. “Transcendence” can be the capstone event to a week spent watching the following:

• “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” (2001) 146 minutes
• “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968) 160 minutes
• “Blade Runner” (1982) 117 minutes
• “Her” (2013) 126 minutes

Total run time: 9 hours, 9 minutes

Harry Potter Films
Yes, we know. The books were better. But these films are still generally considered excellent adaptations of the beloved series. From “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001) to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” (2011), the decade-spanning films have a total run time of 19 hours, 59 minutes.

The Dark Knight Trilogy
Though it could be a sub-set of the super hero movie list, this trilogy stands wonderfully on its own.

• “Batman Begins” (2005) 141 minutes
• “The Dark Knight” (2008) 153 minutes
• “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012) 165 minutes
