After taking second place at the North Regional Championships Dec. 6 at Chabot College, the City College wrestling team now turns its attention to the State Championship at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.
The State Championship starts Friday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m. and continues the following day. The finals will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.
City College defeated the four opponents it faced at the SCC Multi Dual Meet Nov. 16, taking first place at the meet and team clinching the Panthers’ fourth consecutive Big 8 Conference championship.
At the North Regionals rival wrestling squad Fresno City took first place.
The Panthers’ Logan Paxton (184 lbs) and Mark Papish (197 lbs) were crowned champions of their respective weight classes. The team also had three runners-up: Albert Landeros (133 lbs), Brian Sergi (149 lbs) and Adam Busch (165 lbs).
The California Community College Athletic Association has ranked the defending state champions fourth in the state heading into the playoffs.
“We’re going in there to win it,” said City College head wrestling David Pacheco.
In 2013, City College won its second state championship in the school’s history. The first state championship was won in 1996.
The Panthers’ 2014 season started with a third place finish at the Sac City Tournament in September. They finished in fourth and fifth place in the two following tournaments.
“We were a younger team this year, so I think it took some of the younger guys a little while to get used to the level,” said Pacheco.
The Panthers won the first Big 8 Conference match Oct. 15 against Sierra College 28-12. According to Pacheco, the team had a chance to see how well it measured up to the rest of Northern California at the North Duals meet.

At the North Duals meet, the team won its first three matches, setting up a finals match with rival Fresno City College. The Panthers lost that match 30-6 and finished in second place. It was the only conference loss the team suffered all season.
“As a team we really started to hit our stride at the North Duals,” said the Panthers’ 184-pound sophomore wrestler Logan Paxton.
City College finished the 2014 season with an 11-1 Big 8 Conference record.
“November was a good month for us. We clinched the Big 8 Championship, our fourth in a row. The team was really starting to figure it out,” said Pacheco.
The Panthers’ wrestling team has its share of top ranked individuals in the state during the 2014 season. According to California Community College Wrestling, there are 10 different weight classes that range from 125 lbs to 285 lbs. Of these weight classes, the Panthers have 11 wrestlers ranked in the top eight. They also earned seven honorable mentions.
Though the Panthers are defending champions and have so many wrestlers ranked among the top athletes in the state, team members feel they are not being considered as the heavy favorites to repeat again this year.
However, the role of underdog is one the team prefers, according to Panthers’ 197 lbs sophomore wrestler Mark Papish.
“Basically if you walk outside of campus, not a single school believes we will win state except for us. If we actually put together a good tournament, everyone wrestles their best, and we go out and score bonus points, we’ll win,” said Papish.
