From Internet porn and chat rooms to “sexting” and Web sites like Chatroulette.com where users can engage Webcam-based conversations with strangers, advances in technology over the last 20 years have had a great impact on our sexual lives.

“Technology has affected our sexuality a great deal I think,” said City College human sexuality professor Patty Blomberg. “In so many ways, my students are fascinated by the whole business of electronics and sexuality.”

According to a 2008 survey commissioned by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and CosmoGirl.com, 59 percent of young adults ages 20-26 are sending or posting sexually suggestive messages.

“There’s the texting, there’s Facebook, there’s the Web site checking, and then there’s the free porn,” Blomberg said. “And so it’s a lot easier to access porn. We have talks [in class] about the ‘old days’ in the ’90s where you had to go to one of these adult theaters and you could rent porn. But now you don’t even have to go into a porn store. You just can go through the luxury of your laptop, your desktop, your iPhone — you can watch live sex right on your own phone.”

Some argue that engaging in sending sexually explicit photographs and messages is a risky behavior that could compromise not only their reputations but future employment prospects as well.

“If you’re going to do Facebook don’t put anything on it that’s going to be used against you in an interview in 10 years,” Blomberg said, “because there’s really no good way to wipe the Web clean.”

According to a survey performed by RJMetrics, approximately one in 10 feeds from participants on the video networking site Chatroulette.com were either exhibiting themselves in the nude or “appeared to be committing a lewd act.” One in eight “spins”, or the selection of the next random partner in the chat queue, yields something R-rated or worse.

“Just know who you are talking to [and think to yourself] who is going to see these,” Blomberg said. “People don’t know that their text messages can be forwarded. Things you put out there on Facebook can be seen by the entire world. So what do you want the world to know about you? Do you want everybody to see your boobs?”

Some students expressed concern over the way in which some are expressing themselves.

“The Internet is exposed to a lot of young people,” said music major David Smith. “So I think they should be cautious.”
