The cosmetology department at City College dates back to 1940, and now 70 years later it holds prestige with our community and beyond.
“This is the No. 1 [cosmetology] school in the Sacramento area and surrounding areas” says Marcia Bonawitz, a licensed cosmetologist.
A previous beauty shop owner, Bonawitz has been an instructor in the program since 1999.
Kristyn Corrigan, a second semester cosmetology student, says the teachers are “amazing” in educating students in the fundamentals of the beauty business.
“Students learn everything from hair cutting to coloring to facials, wet sets [and] the updos,” Corrigan says. “And that’s just freshman semester.”
The program takes a total of three semesters to complete, not including the prerequisite, Introduction to Cosmetology, which is offered twice a year. Like any fast-paced curriculum, the skills taught are aimed at providing students with entry level skills to enter the competitive beauty business.
With a 95 percent success rate of students who go on to pass the licensing exam, according to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s June 30 examination results, the faculty is committed to putting out top-notch cosmetologists.

“Our program itself is very structured,” Bonawitz says. “Students leave knowing all they need to know to be able to pass, as the curriculum is governed by the state board.”
Students are required to clock in and out to log attendance, cosmetology students are required to have 1,600 documented hours, so when it is time to move forward and help the world look its best, employment usually isn’t too much of an obstacle, Bonawitz says.
“Employers realize they’re from Sac City and (it) has a great reputation,” Bonawitz says. “Most of them have a job before or when they leave, because we encourage them to go out into the industry and introduce themselves.”
While the prospect of entering the profession is exciting for most, one student on the verge of graduation with one semester remaining admits she’s feeling a little nervous.
“But I know I’ll be fine,” says cosmetology student Noonie Magee.
Like many of the aspiring stylists, Magee and Corrigan have goals of ultimately owning their own shops. Corrigan plans on working in a salon while attending school, while Magee would like to work in Atlanta.
“I want to go out and see something new, try to twist it and bring it back here,” Magee says.
The cosmetology department offers its services that range from $2 for basic a simple shampoo to $57 for a three-color highlight process.
