City College tennis splits with Cosumnes

The City College women’s tennis team defeated Cosumnes River College 7-2 at home Feb. 21 while a short-staffed men’s team lost 2-7.

The competition began against the rival Hawks with doubles. In men’s doubles, it was a lopsided bout between teams, yet women’s doubles fought a well-contested match. Singles matches followed with best-of-three-sets in what would turn out to be a five-hour contest. Successful matches added a point to the team tally, respectively.

With only five City College men competing—but Cosumnes’ team fielding six—City College would have a 0-2 hole to play out of from the start. The Hawks handed the Panthers’ men a sound defeat in the doubles competition, going 2-8 and 4-8 in both matches.

“I feel like we could have done a lot better,” said Panthers’ No. 1 ranked men’s tennis player Juan Ortiz. Ortiz and No. 2 ranked doubles partner Nahn Cao took just two games, giving up eight to Cosumnes’ top-ranked players Bryan Leung and Kevin Yu.

“All I can say is hopefully I’ll do better next time,” said Ortiz.

“Next time” came rather quickly when Ortiz faced Leung later that afternoon in singles competition. Both players would take one of two sets.

Unable to agree how to end their match, Ortiz and Leung would decide by flipping a racket. Dropping stripes-up, Lueng’s preference to end the game with first-to-seven was out. By racket decision, the game would end by Ortiz’s preference to play the third set out, which led Ortiz to defeat Leung 2-1.

Ortiz’s win was one of two victories for the Panthers men’s team, while third-ranked Tyler Wilson defeated Hawks’ third Austin Nordman 2-1 in singles.

The Panthers women’s team split their doubles competition results with No. 1 ranked Nadzeya Stokes and second-ranked Vanessa Van Der Valk, defeating the Hawk’s first-ranked Cassie Gomez and second-ranked Tammy Tran, in a terrific come-from-behind win. Early in the match, Stokes and Van Der Valk were down 3-6 before rallying to a 9-7 victory.

Van Der Valk said credit for the rally goes to Stokes’ motivation mid-match.

“She kept saying, ‘We got this. Don’t worry, we got this,’” said Van Der Valk.

Both Panthers’ players took momentum from doubles sets to victories in singles play, cementing a win for the women’s team. The win came despite a strain to Van Der Valk’s back during her singles match that required a five-minute time-out.

“I’m just glad I got our team two points,” said Stokes..

Panthers’ No. 3 ranked Maliyah Shavers defeated singles opponent Angela Guererro 2-1 despite losing to Guererro in the doubles match 5-8.

“She’s so passionate about tennis,” said Shavers’ mother, Latasha Shavers, who has attended all of her daughter’s matches since high school. Shavers, who lives in Tracy, also considered playing tennis for closer-to-home Modesto Community College but is at City College thanks to Panthers’ tennis coach Dave Griffin.

“[Maliyah] emailed both Sac City and Modesto, and Coach Griffin responded first,” said Latasha Shavers.

The Panthers men’s and women’s tennis teams compete next when City College hosts Fresno City College Feb. 25.
